My S was accepted in Engineering late October. Got letter of Honors and Merit ward(Presidential Scholarship 5000)- in separate mails in mid Dec. Got 35 ACT, 3.97 uwGPA. He missed his NMS by one point. I guess National Merit is a major factor for getting major merit awards? Not sure we can hope for any other merit aids from UFM. Waiting to hear scholarship info from other colleges as well, to make a decision. (got admitted in Honors program in Urbanana Champgne, Purdue and WI)
@Mollysan I thought Purdue Honors Engineering wasn’t out yet?
I meant Honors in Urbana only. Purdue haven’t heard about honors yet
cool thanks…that confirms what the school told me. /
Does anyone know if the scholarships come in at different times? So far I’ve only gotten the MN Academic Excellence one, but I was hoping to receive others.
My D was awarded National Scholarship ($5k/year). Her current stats are 3.91 UW and 4.50 W. Top 5% of her high school, toughest curriculum possible, etc. It’s not a lot and we’re very worried about proposed OOS tuition hikes. Expecting that the $38k bill of her first year could rise to $49k by her senior year. Still we appreciate the award. UMN probably a top choice for her ChemE interest while we wait for UCs.
My D was awarded the National Scholarship of $10K a year back in January. I was hoping for more as well but give we are OOS and she is CBS I didn’t really see any other opportunities for her. Seems most of them are for in-state students or they don’t apply to her. I’m very thankful for the $10K. Hopefully more will come through for you.
There should be some preliminary FA info. on the MyU account. Check it out to see how many merit awards they applied to the cost of attendance. One year my oldest had an award show up that we didn’t even know about!
While it’s very possible that additional merit awards are granted, these will most likely be at the department or college level. Hopefully, students going elsewhere will start declining now through March and those awards re-allocated.
Our MyU shows the awards (scholarship, student loan, parent loan) but not how it applies to cost of attendance. Portal shows we’re waiting on Step 3 to receive an email in university account when awards ready for response.
In the meantime if we look at the estimated cost of attendance
Non-resident living in dorm or apartment $23,888 $1,000 $9,058 $1,700 $2,000 $188 $37,834
Anyone know if this means that we will be billed for tuition of $23,888 and housing of $9,058 by school and we will pay directly for the other listed expenses of books, transportation and misc?
You are billed for all direct expenses for services that the school provides such as tuition and fees, room, and board. Then there are direct expenses related to books and supplies, etc. that the student is responsible for procuring (use the UMN bookstore in Coffman for books, I’m told). These are part of the cost of attendance but not billed by school. Finally, there are indirect expenses such as transportation, persona, and misc. that you pay out of pocket and over which you have some discretion.
Hope that helps!
In general the total COA is a bit inaccurate. You need to calculate the marginal cost of your kid’s attendance. Sure, room and board seem like a lot, but then your electric and food bill and home go down! (our water bill plummeted after D1 left for college . . .hmmm . . .).
@Banker1 If we click on “view your estimated awards” by that Step 3 bubble, then click on 2018, we can see how the award applies against cost of attendance. Maybe they’ve just completed for in-state at this point. Step three is not completed yet for us, either, btw.
Thanks @JBStillFlying ! That helps. Clicking on the link by the Step 3 bubble is how we saw the award, student loan and parent loan. So it shows all the awards - for instance $2500 ea semester for National Scholarship. Nothing however about any costs.
@Banker1 - just took a look so that I could remember properly. After clicking on the aid year, you then click on Financial Aid Summary and then click on Budget. Basically, if something is click-able go ahead and click on it. The info. is buried deep within my daughter’s account! LOL.
The links might not yet be active for OOS.
Ok, there it is! I hadn’t clicked the Financial Aid Summary. And then after that I click the Estimated Financial Aid Budget. Now I see the breakdown of costs.
I see the tuition is now higher than the numbers from their website ($26108 actual vs $23888) and the room/board also is higher ($9482 vs $9058).
Thanks again for the help.
Looks like OOS tuition expected to increase 9%? Wow.
Does anyone know if they’re freezing or capping tuition?
IS or OOS?
OOS, definitely not. It is well-known that UM-TC is planning significant OOS increases:
Students who were already attending when the increases were announced will get a cap on the increases. Limiting them to 5%, IIRC.
I do not believe that new students will have any protection from the planned increases, since they were (I hope) aware of them going in.
UM-TC used to award IS tuition to their most desired OOS students. Now, the $10K National Scholar will get you close to IS for the first year, but you will not be protected from OOS increases in subsequent years.
5k Presidential Scholarship
31 ACT 16/510 class rank AP Scholar
Over 100 hours volunteering, president of a club, varisity spring athlete, Member of NHS
OOS from Illinois
Applied in October for the Nursing Gurantee Program and was accepted. Recieved scholarship just this month.
It makes me sad because I really wanted to go here but I needed the 10k scholarship so it would even be in the running price wise.
@Risingsky that $5k/yr would probably only offset the planned increases in OOS tuition over the next 4 years. Nothing more.
We received financial aid offer last week - only had loan offers. Then few days later a Scholarship came from Carlson for $5k for 1 year (and was not included in the financial aid letter). We are out of state, and previously the tuition was attractive but not so much if rate hikes of 9%. She has been given $120k over 4 years from Loyola, $60k over 4 years from Fairfield University - both good schools - tuitions are now comparable to U of Minn or less. Waiting to hear from 3 other schools. Does anyone know if U of Minn negotiates?
