Scholarships

As a reference point, last year we were told that the last batch of merit scholarship letters were sent out on March 15. S received on March 17 so don’t give up. We are IS. Good luck.

lolwutmhm - President’s Scholarships range from $2K-$12K per year, according to the website. My son got $2K OOS (the letter says “$8000 to be equally distributed over four years”). Regardless, seems to be not much rhyme or reason to the amounts and honors/scholars. My S is in scholars. People in both scholars and honors report receiving and not receiving money. Another poster had outstanding stats, but was in Scholars, not Honors, and received $12K. The next level is the Dean’s Scholarship, which is $1500/yr, and appears to be MD residents only. I’m happy my S got some money, but don’t think it’s enough to make it worthwhile to attend. UMD is not a great OOS value compared to other schools IMHO.

Fan1fan, as far as keeping to the topic, I think people were going back to the b/k topic in relation to these scholarships. They were trying to figure out if there was a correlation between the false b/k emails and the recipients of the peeidents scholarships.

Yes Insanemom, that’s what I was trying to figure out. We are OOS, D in Scholars, got 5K a year presidential scholarship today. UMD still pricey but the scholarship makes it a bit more doable.

We’re also oos, in honors, need at least 12,000 a yr to make it to the top of our list. Waiting for the financial aid package, as well as the rest of the notifications to make a final decision.

We’re OOS and received the B/K Scholarship notification in error with all the others who received same. Bitter taste still there, but it happened. Engineering Honors and received letter for President’s Scholarship $12k per year couple days later. Can never say we don’t appreciate it. We added it into our spreadsheet on actual costs - merit & scholarship that will determine decision. We are not saying lowest cost is where we decide to enroll. Many factors as we all know. We wonder if UMDCP will consider matching another state school equally ranked that provided merit scholarship with $5k more per year (if we provided the letter). Worth a try to ask, but we only will if we find UMDCP is our top choice. We won’t waste their time considering, if it wouldn’t be, even if they did, or came close.

I am so disappointed with scholarships for my D. She has a 35ACT is NMF and has 10 AP’s 4.0 UNW.Admited honors 8k p.a She really wanted to be a terp. Umich is cheaper.

I received a Presidential Scholarship for $32,000 over 4 years OOS ¶. I was also accepted to College Park Scholars (still not super clear on what that is and how it compares to honors). Although I’ve received much bigger scholarships from other schools, I am still keeping UMD on my list since it’s the only safety I applied to south of PA. I also received the Banneker/Key email and retraction and was a bit less annoyed about it since I ended up getting a scholarship anyway. Congratulations to all scholarship recipients! I’m looking forward to meeting people at the accepted students day this Friday!

i believe the most you can get out of state is 12k per year and the most you can get in state is 8k per year. both of those are the equivalent of a partial banneker key scholarship.

gozo77: I agree with you even with the $12,000/year scholarship our state flagship would be cheaper. I am sure with those stats your child has plenty of good options.

Am I the only one who’s state flagship isn’t cheap? I only got $3500 a year from Rutgers, so it’s like $21k. With the scholarship from UMD, it’s down to about $25k… which really isn’t bad comparatively.

I’m with FN. The combination of the words “state flagship” and “cheap” are foreign to me, living in PA with the most expensive and probably least generous public school in the country. After receiving no aid from Penn State whatsoever, the 12k/year from Maryland makes it slightly cheaper than my state flagship. It will be a tough decision given that Penn State is generally considered a stronger engineering school, but Maryland is where I really want to be. Also have Clemson, Pitt, Virginia Tech, and Alabam to consider, so far. Hoping for some last-minute merit aid from someone to make the decision easier.

Very disappointed with the mistaken email and retraction. I did get a phone call from UMD to let me know that my son would be getting a scholarship. $8000 a year is not much when OOS. Rutgers with a $16000 a year is much better all the way around.

azk5370: Penn State is not known for their merit aid. Both my children did not bother to apply to Penn State because of this. They did apply to Pitt and both received full tuition scholarships.

Kinda freaking out just curious here: In state 1370 on my reading and math SATs, and a 4.04 weighted GPA, accepted into honors college and still no scholarship letter :frowning: will i be getting nothing, or could anyone make a guess around what I would get? I’m instate and received merit aid from UMBC and was wondering if I won’t get anything from College Park

mszczepaniak37, no one can tell you as we don’t have the metrics that MD uses for its awards. But if I were you, I’d call the admissions office and ask if they are done with awards or not. Not worth it to freak out.

FromMD posted earlier that last year the last awards went out March 15, so it’s not hopeless. Should you call, please do post and let us know what they say, I’m sure there are others who would like to know.

Based on your question and my own curiosity, I researched last year’s thread. Posters then thought the SAT score is weighted much more heavily than GPA for merit awards, and this makes sense. That’s how MD gets that rep for being more competitive each year. They highly incentivize the really high SAT scorers, as MD has a way to go to be super competitive by that metric.

MD is much tighter with aid than I had thought. The cutoffs sound higher than in previous years based on what we were told in financial aid sessions. Wish I’d read last year’s posts here sooner, they seem to show a more realistic picture.

I did call the Admissions Office to make sure they were using the latest round of my D’s SAT scores, as her award was much smaller than for other public U’s. They said they “make no mistakes” and merit awards are NOT negotiable. This is consistent with poster’s experiences last year.

So for those of you considering ‘appealing’ the merit award, I’m sorry to say I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere.

As you know, they DO make mistakes - we only need to see the thread about the B/K accidental e-mail! I suggest calling. Those SAT scores are high enough that I would think SOME type of merit is deserved. I also know that my son received an e-mail last year saying that one of his scholarships was being revoked because he no longer qualified for it. He was quite upset, as was I. He has a 3.8 gpa in computer engineering, officer in a large club, extra curriculars,… I couldn’t understand how he no longer qualified. He was very busy at school and didn’t have time to call the office during business hours so I called. It turns out that someone went into his account and changed his status to graduate student (he was a sophomore at the time). So, yes, they DO make mistakes and I would definately follow up on merit - sooner than later. Good luck!!!

Not trying to be a downer but I am not sure if the SAT’s are high enough for guarenteed money. Since the 75% was 1410 this year that means his/her 1370 is likely somewhere around ~65-70% tile of scores. Do the top 30-35% of students all receive money?

Does 1/3 of the student body receive merit aid?

mszczepaniak37

I don’t think you will get much if anything as far as merit from UMCP. Dd had same SAT and higher GPA 3.9/4.45. IB/AP student and got nothing from UMCP and was given money from all the other state schools.

I have a 1430 SAT (M&V), a 4.45 GPA, am a Maryland resident, have taken 8 APs through junior year (with mostly 5 scores on the tests) and was not offered any money, or honors or scholars. My peers in terms of scores, grades, and extracurricular activities were all offered honors and scholars, and small amounts of money. Not sure what is going but it seems very random and unfair.
