School of Cinematic Arts Applicants

Congrats, raku!! It's 80 degrees and sunny in L.A. today if that sounds inviting.

Just found out that my daughter got in!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We received two USC letters, a small one and a big thick envelope.

She will be in the Production Program. Thank you, everyone, on this list for supporting me. It has been a long wait. I wish each one of you the BEST! Hang in there!

Congratulations suenos!! It is really exciting to see each of you ccers (and cc Ds and Ss) get into this terrific school. I've actually been having "survivor guilt" that our family was miraculously spared your long months of waiting. But now is the time for you and D to celebrate.

What area of the country are you from?

Ughh...production acceptances are coming out and my mailbox was empty. =/

Congratulations though!

Edit: I'm starting to a see a pattern with those who were accepted to SCA the past few days; they all seem to have had status updates on 3/22.

Mine is stuck on 3/12...looks like a rejection =/

Suenos --

Wonderful news for your D! And with a large scholarship, too, if I remember correctly. Congrats!

And Chinaski, do not give up hope. We were freaking out around here when coolrena's friend and the friend of the poster in Syracuse got in and S hadn't heard, but later he got in. It seems that acceptances are coming out in an attenuated process, and you just can't assume anything until you have a letter in hand. Good luck!!!

Thank you.

No, no scholarship. But we did not ask for one.

Madbean, we live two and a half hours from LA, near Palm Springs. Where are you from and where is your son going to stay? We are looking into dorms right now. My D likes the idea of international or where film students are or a kind of quiet spot. (not crazy). Has anyone heard of the Fluor Tower or the Intl Residential Parkside?

Congrats to suenos and to shadekeiko, who also got in today!

Chinaski - we're suffering with you! No fun mail in sunny Seattle :(

Congratulations, guys! Good luck to the rest of us; I know a lot of fingers are crossed.

My daughter just received an acceptance to the Animation and Digital Arts. Her status suddenly changed to "reviewed" on 3/20. Finally, we got some great news at our house, after she was rejected by most UC's: UCLA Digital Arts, Davis, Santa Barbara, and San Diego.

Looks like the decisions are trickling in. I wish the best to everybody still waiting!

What dorms are you all looking into and what attracts you to the dorm?
My daughter is reading all she can....she likes Radisson, Fluor and Intl Parkside. We'd appreciate your comments.

Again, good luck to everyone else who is waiting for news.

I've put Fluor suites as my first choice; they seem like the best dorms on campus for freshmen.

suenos, we're about a half hour drive north of USC. My S has a few friends at USC and taking their advice about dorms. He's gone up and back a few times (maybe too much time to think?) At first, he had been excited about the film floor at New, but now thinks the atmosphere may just be too over-the-edge party for him (he is applying for TO and expects the need for some quiet at times).

Fluor is nice, I hear. A bit far away from Zemeckis where my S will have classes for game design, and full of athletes which may not be the kids my S would naturally hang with (teams tend to stay together socially, I've noticed). Parkside is the newest and has nice floorplans, I think. My S thinks he'd like a regular dorm rather than suites like Parkside (which is also far away) because it's a chance to meet more kids maybe?

But I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. All are very nice and, with luck, our kids will get great roommates and have a blast.

Short anecdote: friend of friend's daughter was accepted as a spring admit, which was a disappointment, but better than not getting in at all. ;) She kept in touch with admissions and said she'd take a fall spot if any opened up, no matter how late. Sure enough, in August (!) she was notified they had an opening. She had no choice in housing and was assigned a room at the Radisson. Turned out she loves it there. Goes to visit her partying friends in New/North when she wants a good time. Goes home to study. Has a private bathroom (shared with just her roommate) and maid service. So I guess it all works out.

What are other film students thinking re: housing?

Well, I got in SC as a Theatre major, but I applied to housing on the Cinema floor. You see, I plan on double majoring in Critical Studies as well and I LOVE film so I figured it would be a good fit.

BTW, if you don't know what the Cinema floor is in New College, you should check it out. It looks awesome!

I think I'm putting Birnkrant as my first choice. I'm hearing it has a nice balance of social and study, which is probably what I need. :)

As for other choices, I'm leaning towards Pardee and Fluor. I'm not much of a party person, so I doubt I'd do very well in New North, LOL. I don't think I could handle it.

Have any of the new acceptees been able to log into the system thing to do the deposit/housing stuff? I tried earlier, and it wasn't working. Perhaps there is some sort of waiting period after the letters have been sent off...

My S put down Birnkrant as his first choice, also. And you should be able to register. Try again in a little while.

S is another film student with Birnkrant as first choice -- also heard that it was verly social and fun, but more of a balance than New.

Wow!! my son got into production today. We are all amazed, it had to be the strength of his writing. His status moved from we've rec'd on 3/19 and then updated again 3/22. His letter was dated 3/20. Good luck to everyone else!!

I was noticing on the accepted students thread that in general, the SCA accepted students had lower GPA's than other students. I thought that was interesting and probably verifies that the writing samples carry a lot more weight with SCA.

Congrats to your S, kjl2124! So you said his writing his strong...what about other things on his creative resume (was that what they called it?)? Can you tell us what kinds of things he listed?

I received a call form sca yesterday... they wanted to verify that I was still taking the current semester classes I said I would (I'm a junior transfer). I want to feel that this is a good sign, she said that transfers were the last to find out. But, I just feel that the fact they are taking the time to call must mean something, right?

pirates - I think that's a pretty good sign that they would take the trouble to actually call you, instead of a more perfunctory email or something. It suggests urgency and interest!

Congrats to all the recent admittees and their parents!

My son's status date finally changed from 12/13 to 3/25. He's been in review since 3/6. I'm guessing that means they've looked at his app at last, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they looked at it favorably!
