Schools with fall auditions/ED/EA/rolling admissions

In another thread, we were sharing schools that have fall audition dates, ones that have ED or EA for auditioned programs, and other ways to have answers earlier than March.

Let's start a list here, since it is very helpful for those planning their application season.

Please add schools to the list under the various categories. For now, let's stick to auditioned programs (BFA or BA), since non-auditioned schools that offer this option are so numerous it would clog the thread. Also, let's focus mostly on theatre admissions decisions, since many schools will give an EA/rolling academic admission, but students might still have to wait until spring for their audition results.

Fall auditions:
Rolling admissions/early notification for Theatre:
ED Theatre:
EA Theatre:

ED - Boston University BFA School of Theatre (audition is early Nov. for ED applicants)

Fall auditions:

Rolling admissions for Theatre: UArts, Point Park,

ED Theatre: Boston University BFA School of Theatre (audition is early Nov. for ED applicants) ; NYU Tisch

EA Theatre: Hartt, Emerson.

Schools that offer Fall auditions, but notify all applicants in March: Syracuse, CMU

(I think Evansville, Shenandoah, and Coastal Carolina all offer some type of rolling or EA admission-- hopefully someone in the know can put them in the right spots.)

ED -
Boston University BFA School of Theatre (audition is early Nov. for ED applicants)
NYU/Tisch - (auditions in ny only - November for ED and January for ED II

EA -
Wright State (BFA Acting & BFA MT) - I think you are notified shortly after your audition. Not sure that there is an official early deadline. Auditions are nov-feb according to their website

Gwen - guess we posted at the same time :). I’ve consolidated

Fall auditions:

Rolling admissions for Theatre: UArts, Point Park,

ED Theatre: Boston University BFA School of Theatre (audition is early Nov. for ED applicants) ; NYU Tisch
EA Theatre: Hartt, Emerson, Wright State

Schools that offer Fall auditions, but notify all applicants in March: Syracuse, CMU, Webster

(I think Evansville, Shenandoah, and Coastal Carolina all offer some type of rolling or EA admission-- hopefully someone in the know can put them in the right spots.)

Adelphi has EA for academics - app deadline 12/1, notified 12/31 - and usually has a fall theatre audition, with a quick notification afterwards.

ED Theatre: Boston University BFA School of Theatre (audition is early Nov. for ED applicants) ; NYU Tisch

I think Shenandoah does a type of rolling audition…you must audition by February to be considered for a talent scholarship, though.

I think that Montclair State has a non-binding Early Action option for their BFA. The college itself has rolling admissions, and a student must be accepted first, but they have an audition in November.

Evansville is rolling for admission to the Theatre dept and talent awards, EA for academic admission and university merit awards.

EmmyBet – this is a good idea for a thread but I wonder if it would be more useful to break this up a bit differently and make it more general. For schools that have call back weekends and/or don’t notify people to the end, I’m not sure it is a big distinction as to whether or not the school has Fall auditions.

It seems to me the major categories of schools are as follows:

Rolling Admissions (school that will notify applications on an ongoing basis regardless of when a student applies)

Early Decision (if student commits to school as his or her first choice and auditions by a fixed fall date, school will make an early decision that is binding subject to certain conditions)

Early Action (if student auditions by a fixed fall date, school will take early action that is non-binding on the student)

March Decision/No Call Back Weekend (regardless of when a student auditions, decisions are not made till March and either most or all of the candidates are further reviewed at a call back weekend)

March Decision/Call Back Weekend (regardless of when a student auditions, decisions are not made till March after all the candidates have auditioned)

To avoid confusion, I think we should just use this thread for grouping BFA Acting schools.

If you or others think its a good idea to break them down this way, I think the schools I’m aware of and/or are listed here break down as follows.

Rolling Admissions – U of Arts, Point Park, Shenandoah, Evansville
Early Decision – BU, NYU
Early Action – Hartt, Emerson, Wright State, Adelphi, Montclair State
March Decision/No Call Back Weekend – CMU, NCSA, Depaul, Syracuse, Webster
March Decision/Call Back Weekend – Rutgers, Juiliard, Minnesota-Guthrie

I think some of the details like distinctions on scholarships and exact dates is probably too much detail.

Actingdad…perfect. If anyone adds to this list, just copy and paste from above…that will keep the information consistent.

Is it possible to add a category that addresses “on-campus” only auditions? There are quite a few in this group and this info factored into whether an application was submitted (trying to limit our travel!). I can’t remember off hand but I believe one or both of the “Oklahoma’s” and one of the Florida MT programs. I will look back to see, if you decide to add a category.

AdaQuince – I think it would make the categorization too complicated to add campus audition only because it is not a distinct category from any of the other categories. You could have on-campus audition/ED, on-campus audition only/EA, etc.

I might be incorrect about Montclair State. I cannot find information on their website, nor can I confirm my recollection in my own records. My son did not apply to MSU, but I remember thinking that it would be wise to apply and audition early. They certainly offer rolling general admissions, and have at least one on-campus audition date in the fall. They might not notify candidates for the BFA until the spring, however. At the very least, it can be a non-audition safety, and a financial safety for NJ residents.

I took Montclair State out till someone can confirm.

I don’t know how you want to add this, or if you want to, but it might help someone like me. There is such a small number of tech kids, but it would be helpful to those of fall in that category. CMU does offer ED for Design and Production. Also, UNCSA has rolling type admission for the D&P kids with interviews beginning in November.

Adaquince has a good idea about getting a list of programs that don’t travel to audition (at or near Unifieds) They see fewer auditioners and that cuts the competition a bit-- it also changes the audition pool. It’s definitely worth knowing about these in advance.

Elon, Shenandoah, Adelphi, Arcadia… these are a few I know of and there are many more. If someone wants to add to this or start a thread for this, I think it could be a help to the next generation.

For some of the above, I suspect their beautiful and safe campuses are powerful recruiting tools. Arcadia is less well known than many, but a friend’s son has had a wonderful experience and education there, and the main campus building looks like Hogwarts!

Rolling Admissions – U of Arts, Point Park, Shenandoah, Evansville, UNCSA (tech only)

Early Decision – BU, NYU, CMU (tech only)

Early Action – Hartt, Emerson, Wright State, Adelphi,

On Campus Auditions Only – Elon, Shenandoah, Adelphi, Arcadia

(Okay – added on campus to the list and ugadog99’s tech only additions)
