I am an incoming freshman to UCLA. I’ve heard from numerous sources that bikes are prohibited in many areas of the campus, and they’re also a hassle to use when biking the many hills of Westwood. I was wondering if kick scooters are a suitable means of transportation on campus? I’ve seen the Bird electric scooters laying around the campus, but I’m not planning on always needing to rent one. Thoughts?

UCLA is definitely not a bike friendly campus the way UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis are. There is a very steep downhill followed by an equally steep uphill to contend with between the dorms and most academic areas. It’s not clear to me how useful a scooter would be to contend with those hills.
I’m actually living at UCLA right now for the summer, and it seems like a really popular mode of transportation is electric scooters. They’re called “Birds” here and I’m pretty sure you just connect the scooter to an app on your phone. Anyway, they’re everywhere on campus and in Westwood (even in Santa Monica). Other than that, walking is most popular so I wouldn’t really worry about investing in your own personal scooter. Hope this helps!
