Looking for some advice on here from people who are from the area. My boyfriend was admitted to SDSU and I was denied. I did get into CSU LA. We are both from Northern CA. so know nothing about the areas. We are considering trying to live halfway between the 2 which looks like a town called San Clemente. Does anyone have any suggestions of other places to live that might be about half way between the 2 schools and know anything about the commute? I am assuming traffic will be terrible, but what about leaving early in the AM? Thank you in advanced for any help or advice!
@CassBeachGirl17 - Frankly, I think that is a terrible idea. San Clemente to SDSU is a one hour drive and that’s only without traffic. A round trip will take 3+ hours approximately, factoring in traffic. For you, driving in LA will be very stressful because of the high volumes of traffic. Honestly, I think it will be very bothersome to have to constantly drive back and forth, plus gas money and parking passes will be very expensive over time. The 3 hours spent driving is time wasted that could have been spent on studying or hanging out with friends, participating in clubs, sleeping, etc.
If your boyfriend is entering as a freshman at SDSU, he will be required to live on campus for the first two years since he isn’t from the local area around SDSU. The reason they require this is because “First year and second year students who live in SDSU campus housing are proven to academically out-perform their peers who live off campus. Research shows that the average GPA is 11 percent higher for residential students and 13 percent higher for students living in learning communities.”
My suggestion is to live on campus, and each long weekend, you guys could meet up somewhere and find a place to stay that isn’t on campus.
geography and traffic will make finding a place that will work for both of you. Unless you have a helicopter, there is no way it will be reliably less than 90 minutes for each way for both of you. Sitting in SoCal traffic for 3 hours a day is no way to spend your freshman year. I suggest you both live on campus wherever you go.
Where else did you get in?
Unfortunately, I did not get in anywhere else in southern California. I recently heard back from Fullerton and was denied. I am a Kinesiology major and my GPA is 3.09 which is just not a competitive GPA for my major and out of area at that. My boyfriend got into the SDSU Biomechanics Master’s program, we are both transfer students. I was worried about the traffic and suspected it would be more than 1 hour. It’s going to be tough to live apart after living together for 3 years, but might be the better choice to prevent the stress from traffic. Thank you all for the honest input!! I appreciate it : )
The closest campus to SDSU is San Marcos, you didn’t apply there? As transfer students you don’t have to live on campus, but that commute will be a killer for both of you. We just have too much traffic in Southern California. I would find housing on or off campus with other transfer students and see each other on the weekends. It will be hard, but doable.
I wish I could have! My transfer counselor told me that San Marcos was unfortunately not accepting out of area transfers this coming semester. I am on the wait list for CSULB and still have not heard back yet, but I am not sure how likely it is that I will get in.
