Hi! I just got denied from SDSU and applied to major in Psychology I had a 3.88GPA. What are some tips you recommend for my appeal letter.
SDSU wants to see new and compelling information not presented in your original application which would show you are a stronger applicant.
-
Medical issues, major family issues that may have contributed to low grades.
-
No access to AP/IB classes due to schedule conflicts or these type of classes not available at your school.
Whatever the reason you present, you will need to provide documentation to prove your case.
Hi!Thank you for the information!
Here are some of my ideas I would like to tell them:
-why my grades were lower than normal in sophomore year (because of a family death) and how I was able to bounce back from that?
- talk about how my brother is a Junior there and how i fell in love with the school
- talk about how I take care of my grandparents (which has to do with the medical field which what I want to go into) and how my grandparents moved near San Diego so I can still help them out if I get accepted into SDSU
- mention how i am currently an intern for a company that is related to my major
Please let me know what you think of these ideas Thank you!
Is your 3.88 GPA the capped weighted CSU GPA? If so, that is slightly above average for SDSU but no guarantee in one of the most popular and competitive majors.
Also Psychology is highly impacted with around a 37% acceptance with 4927 applicants last year.
My CSU GPA is a 3.83 and yeah typically Psychology is an impacted major at SDSU
-
Sorry to hear about a family death but if you mention this, you need to show you overcame the issues causing the low grades.
-
I would not mention your brother since SDSU does not consider legacy sibling or parents
-
Helping with grandparents is admirable so you can mention this especially if it requires a large time commitment.
-
SDSU does not consider volunteer or job experience in their application review so it will not tip the scales.
Just be aware that appeals are rarely granted but if you feel strongly about your decision, definitely file an appeal. In the meantime, you will have SIR to another school since appeal decisions may not be out until the summer.
Best of luck.
All majors at SDSU are impacted, but some more than others.
Ok thank you for your helpful insight! The only reason why I was thinking about including my internship is just to show that I am interested in my major and after searching through websites, people have reccommended to add new information about myself that they couldnt see on my application
Has anyone heard back from appeals for Fall 2022?
Yes! My son got an email from SDSU Admission Appeal on 6/1 that said:
‘Your admission appeal request has been received by San Diego State University. In order for your appeal to be reviewed further, the following documents need to be provided by June 10, 2022. Official transcripts from: (his high school name here)’
He submitted an appeal online about 3 weeks ago and it was more of an continued interest letter. It was a longshot but they responded!
Unfortunately he’s decided to continue going to UCSC and not lose his spot as a Comp Sci major and his college/housing assignment/roommates which is completed. He was afraid he would be left scrambling for a major and housing if he pursued SDSU, not knowing if he will even get admitted yet.
