SDSU Nursing Direct Entry Program With a C in "Advanced Integrated Math III" from Point Loma High

Hello, my son is about to start his Senior Year at Point Loma High in San Diego.

GPA: 4.1 weighted with lots of AP science classes
ACT: 26 with a 27 in math and STEM sections.
EI looks like: 1080

He wants to apply to SDSU Nursing program. But he got a “C” in the second semester of “Advanced Integrated Math III” at Point Loma last year.

He took Honors Geometry in AZ in 9th grade and got: A/A for the two semesters
10th Grade (Point Loma/San Diego): B/A for the two semesters of Integrated Math II
11th Grade (Point Loma/San Diego): B/C for the two semesters of Integrated Math III

This year he is taking two semesters of Pre Calc.

Is he ineligible to even apply for the nursing program because of that C last semester in his math class?

Thanks.

His test scores are more likely to hold him back. What is his unweighted GPA?

Actually we just were figuring his GPA’s (since there are three ways to do it). Unweighted GPA is 3.5. Weighted/capped 3.9 (not including gym classes). He has taken 10 AP semesters and as I understand it, only a maximum of 8 can be counted.

So do all the Universities in CA only count the 10th and 11th grades? He would be a little higher if they counted 9th grade classes. He took 3 Honors/AP classes and only had one B overall in two semesters, but went to school OOS and CA does not recognize the AP classes there. But I guess no sense worrying about that if they don’t consider 9th grade classes anyway.

He has only taken the ACT test once and did not prepare much for it. He feels pretty confident he can get it up to a 29-30

CSU’s only count 10-11th grades for the a-g course requirements and have a cap of 8 semesters for UC approved Honors/AP/IB or DE courses taken during this time.

I like to use this calculator which gives you the UC UW GPA, Capped weighted GPA and Fully weighted GPA (UCLA/UCB uses the fully weighted).

Eligibility index data that I have collected for SDSU’s Nursing program indicates that a minimum EI of 1120 (ACT) for a local applicant is needed for a decent chance.

The nursing website states you need a minimum B for Algebra, but does not state any minimums for a higher level math course. Also he needs a minimum 3.0 GPA in all a-g courses.

It will be a tough admit regardless and make sure he applies widely.

My son said that the “Advanced Integrated Math” is considered to be Algebra at Point Loma High. But this is his second year of it. In “Advanced Integrated Math II” sophomore year he got an A first semester and a B second semester. This year is Pre calc so I hope he is right. Maybe they will look at that Sophomore class as qualifying for the year of algebra. I told him it will be a long shot anyway. We are looking at some Pennsylvania direct admit programs which look much easier to get into and we were told that he actually has a good chance at merit scholarships over there in addition to just getting accepted into the program. I told him he would be smart to go that route, and then just come back to California after he graduates to work and live.

@sanluisdavid Your son’s stats are definitely competive. I was accepted last year and my EI was 1130.The only thing is you have to have B’s in Intermediate Algebra, Biology, and Chemistry with lab courses. The requirements are listed here :https://nursing.sdsu.edu/programs/bs-in-nursing/admissions/direct-admission/

Were you accepted at SDSU? I personally spoke to the admissions folks there and was told point blank that even a 4.1 GPA with 27 ACT would not have a chance. He has straight A’s again this semester. She encouraged me to have him apply for engineering because he would almost certainly get in. But would be wasting his opportunity if he applied for RN because they only consider one major, you cannot have a backup. So if you don’t get into RN, they will not consider any other majors you may be interested in. That is ridiculous!! But the entire State of CA is a joke in my opinion. We are moving back to AZ after school lets out. This place is nuts. Hobos, criminals, and junkies get more consideration than the law abiding citizens. I feel bad for the people who are getting fleeced here with the high taxes who don’t get much for it in return. My son got into a better program in PA, with 100% pass rate on the National Boards, $18K/year scholarship for a school that only costs $33K to begin with. As an out of state student! He can move back to CA after he gets his license if he wants. I may encourage him to apply to SDSU just in case, just to report the results back here. Thanks!
