SDSU Weber’s Honor’s College

Do any of you have experience with Weber’s Honor’s College? My D was accepted to SDSU for Fall ‘19, and was invited to apply to their honor’s college. She did, but we are also trying to do some research about it since it is still so new.
Any idea of acceptance rate out of those who are invited to apply?
Experience of the program vs the standard SDSU experience. We would love to hear anything about it to help make decisions. @Gumbymom
Thanks!

My younger son was invited to apply but did not only because he felt that his major CS was going to be very demanding and did not want any extra work beyond his required major courses. He did have 2 friends that were accepted into the Honor’s college and loved the perks such as priority registration, honors housing and the ability to work closely with many of the great professors that teach at SDSU.

I would PM @fish125 whom had a student in the Weber’s Honor college and maybe they can shed some light on their experience.

The Honor’s college is not that new. It has been around for several years.

This post may help: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/san-diego-state-university/1855806-weber-honors-college-class-of-2020.html

My D is a freshman in the WHC. She has taken 4 honors units first semester and is currently taking another 3 this semester. She doesn’t feel any additional burden since she is able to replace required GE courses with her AP/DE credits. So in total she’s still carrying a normal 16 unit load per semester and able to stay on 4-year plan.

The main perk for her is the Zura honors dorm. Another is the interdisciplinary Studies minor. Another is the opportunity (mandate) to do study abroad experience that comes with scholarship opportunities. Not sure about the preferred registration perk as she and all nursing students have their required classes reserved for them by their nursing adviser. Be sure to check out the FAQ for WHC https://honors.sdsu.edu/faq

@Banker1: I forgot your D was a Honors’ college student. Being a Nursing student is a heavy workload in general so it is great that she is able to handle the Honor’s courses with her demanding curriculum.

@805Mommp: I did not want to give you the wrong impression about the workload for WHC, but my son had different priorities in that he wanted to rush a Fraternity which required a lot of extra time demands. I really would have preferred that he applied, but to each his own. Either way SDSU is a great opportunity with or without WHC.

I didn’t want to imply that WHC was easy and don’t blame anyone for really weighing if the extra required honors classes are worth the advantages offered. Without having those AP/DE credits to replace other required classes then it would probably be a NO. My D also understands she may need to drop out of WHC her sophomore year once the more rigorous nursing-specific activities such as clinicals get started.

Hello, @Gumbymom!! Has it really been three years since I wrote that post in the link you shared?! WOWZA! Time has flown. @805Mommp - As Gumbymom wrote, my kid was a WHC student his four undergrad years at SDSU. It was a wonderful experience. He was a STEM major, but he does have a humanities’ heart, so being a part of WHC gave him a very well-rounded education. Would he have received a stellar education at SDSU without being in WHC? Absolutely, but he loved the smaller classes, the camaraderie with his WHC floormates and cohort, the registration perk, and you can’t ask for a better mentor/fierce protector of students than Stacey Sinclair, WHC Director, and her staff. The program also staffs, in addition to the floor RA, an academic mentor on each WHC dorm floor. My son’s AM was a great resource. There are leadership opportunities within WHC for the students, and truly, Dr. Sinclair and her staff are always available for the kids. My Aztec also went on the honors faculty-led study abroad to Finland one summer with several in his cohort. WHC thoroughly prepared them for the experience with several pre-departure student meetings, and he had a terrific time.

It was the honors program presentation and reception during the annual spring Explore SDSU weekend that sold my son on selecting SDSU when he was a senior in high school. He had many other options including UCLA and UCSD, but when we left that presentation/reception, as we were walking away, he said, “this is where I’m supposed to be.” And, he never regretted it.

When my son graduated in 2017, we attended the WHC graduation celebration. We learned about each of the students, their accomplishments while at State, and their immediate plans for the future. We came away very impressed with all their hard work, and it was wonderful to see how on fire they were for their future. My son felt such a connection that he chose to go right into a two year master’s program at State. Disclaimer: I know of many, many SDSU students who are equally as accomplished but weren’t a part of WHC. Success always depends upon the student and how focused, organized, driven, and tenacious they are. Also, WHC students are allowed to drop out of the program. Just because a student chooses to be a WHC student freshman year doesn’t mean they are tied to that decision all four years.

A little background on the program: SDSU has had an honors curriculum for decades, and it became a full-fledged Honors Program around 2002 when they hired their first program director. The then president, Stephen Weber and his wife Susan, were huge supporters of the program, In 2015, it was elevated to an Honors College and named after the Webers.

Do you know if priority registration for classes is still offered? I don’t see it listed here: http://honors.sdsu.edu/about-honors/college-benefits

@sddanr - I think priority registration stopped after my son’s early years, but he was also on an SDSU academic scholarship so he received extra perks with that, and some of those perks blended with the WHC ones, so I forget if that one was solely with WHC or also with the merit scholars. But, freshmen students receive early registration benefits especially if they go through the summer orientation.

@805Mommp Did your daughter apply to the SDSU nursing program?

@Bonchien No, as a Bio major. After she submitted, she had wished she had applied to nursing.

My daughter was accepted back in 2014. She specifically asked about priority registration and was told it was not offered. She did not attend so I can’t help.

My son is currently a freshman in the WHC and is thriving at SDSU. He loves living in Zura and is having a great overall experience. There is no longer priority registration for Honor’s College students, which is unfortunate as that would be a nice perk! The required additional courses have not presented a problem at all, though he would prefer to get a minor in something other than Interdisciplinary Studies. We don’t have experience beyond this point, but as of now I feel that it’s great program and we’re happy he is involved. I appreciate the WHC Advisor who is available to this group to help guide them along the way. My son is very social and has no trouble making friends but for those who may struggle a bit more, especially at a school as large as SDSU would probably appreciate the smaller “college within a college” that WHC can provide. If your student is admitted to WHC and you have the chance I would recommend attending the WHC reception that I believe is held in March during the SDSU Open House. It made me so excited for him to attend SDSU (DH and I are Alum) as well as be a part of WHC.

Son accepted to Weber yesterday via snail mail (in San Diego). 4.27 CSU GPA, 1400 SAT

Daughter accepted to Weber yesterday/today via snail mail. We are also in San Diego. 4.07 CSU GPA. 29 ACT. International Business (China) major.

Waitlisted for Weber today- 4.03 GPA, 1560 SAT. Anyone know what the criteria for selection was?

@sdscoutmom: Did your daughter try to register for the reception with the email address on the acceptance letter? I think it may not be live yet as we got a message “Survey Not Found”

@fdha951: in addition to grades and scores, I expect that it was a holistic process based on the short answer questions (extracurriculars, community and volunteer activities, employment, etc.) and the essay. Maybe a process similar to the UC selection process?

@fdha951: Also, I’ll bet that you still may have a good chance of admittance from the waitlist. I’m sure that some people who were accepted in the first round will choose other schools. For example, my son is still undecided on SDSU until he hears back from all the schools he applied to. Good luck!

@sddanr That seems about right- I have good essays, but pretty lackluster ECs. SB still sent me a Chancellor’s, though- maybe UCs care more about essays and SDSU is more interested in ECs? Anyways, thank you! I’m not super attached to this result, but I’m super anxious for the rest of the UC results and this made me started worrying about my chances. Good luck to you and your son as well!

We did try to register for the reception and at first got the same message. We wrote to Weber and they replied that the 0 in the web address is really the capital letter “O”. Good luck!

Thanks @sdscoutmom! Son received an email last night and the RSVP link worked fine in that.
