As someone who is constantly changing their mind as to what to major in I was wondering about the way some things work in regards to that at UA.

How soon do you have to declare a major and is it difficult to complete your major if you don’t declare it freshman year?

How difficult would it be to double major or major/minor in two programs in different schools? For example, would political science/marketing or political science/telecom even be possible? The honors college website sounded like it was good at arranging odd combos…

Are you allowed to take classes in most departments even if they are not your major? I guess what I mean with this one is that if I wanted to explore different options to find what interests me how possible is that.

Are there conselors to help you determine what might be good programs of study for you?

My problem is that I know what interests me, but I’m not always so sure that I like the types of jobs associated with those topics so I don’t feel ready to pin down a major. As always, thanks for the help!

You state your intended major on your application so that whatever college that major is in can advise you. It is possible to change the major on your application or be undecided, in which case you will be advised by the College of Arts and Sciences. Note that you can’t state a double major on your application. Official declaration of a major depends on the college, but is traditionally done before your junior year or earlier if you have enough credits from hs.

It is possible to have majors/minors in two different colleges, though with majors you may be subject to certain required courses that are not required by your other major. for example, the college of business requires certain 300-level courses in different business subjects. Honors can help you arrange combos, but it is the departments and colleges you need to contact for the appropriate forms.

As long as you meet the prerequisites for a certain course, you should be able to take it.

There are counselors available to assist you and you can always e-mail professors in whichever subjects may interest you. In honors, the person who probably knows more about the various majors and opportunities available at UA than anyone is Dr. Halli, the dean emeritus. His e-mail is rhalli@bama.ua.edu .
