I am a senior and I failed CP Calculus with a D+ first semester. I have taken Calc I at my local community college and AP Calc BC both semester at a online accredit high school by the UC System. I passed both classes with an A. I will most likely pass second semester CP Calculus with an A or B. Will this be enough to not get rescinded from the UC’s and CSU’s. Should I let them know before decision or after. I failed due to a medical problem which was very severe missing classes. Please help I am freaking out!
Thoughts @gumbymom?
Don’t freak out.
You need to talk to your guidance counselor immediately and ask him or her to intervene on your behalf. Yes, those grades are enough to possibly get you rescinded, unfortunately. There is no hiding them. Ask your GC to contact the schools you applied to and update your file with information about your medical condition. You will probably have to find a way to bring the grade up.
If you haven’t already done so, get a doctor’s letter that states what the illness was and that you are now recovered. The GC will include that information, which will give your story credibility. Good luck.
@dante101: Help me understand the situation. You are taking a lower level CP Calculus class Senior year after you have already passed 2 Higher level Calculus courses (Calc 1 at the CC and AP Calculus AB)? Why since you are duplicating the course material and probably will not get credit for the CP Calculus course??
The UC’s take D’s and F’s seriously so I agree that your counselor should try to intervene on your behalf but did they recommend to take the CP class? Since you had a medical issue, is it possible to get a retroactive withdrawal from the class altogether? You have A’s in higher level courses which validates the lower level math course D.
Make sure your GC and yourself contact all schools where you applied and ask them about the situation. Again it makes no sense to be taking CP Calculus at this point.
I have taken Calc I (cc) and AP Calc BC (UC Scout provided by the UC System, WASC accredited) over the summer of my junior year (separate from high school). I signed up for AP Calc BC at my high school as this was one of the next three course from Precalc H. The courses were Calculus, AP Calc AB. and AP Calc BC. I have chosen AP Calc BC but due to space they gave me CP Calculus. At the time I did of signing up for school classes I would take these online classes (Calc I and AP Calc BC) as these were last minute decisions. Now it is senior year and my medical condition I have had since sophomore year (stated in apps as well) had become worse and I need to seek medical attention immediately as not treating could cause the possibility of cancer. I after five months I have kind of recovered and back on track to recover fully. I am also taking Calc II and my local community college right now. I will most likely pass with an A or B for second semester in my school. Is this enough to not get rescinded. I was also dealing with family problems due to covid my dad lost his job and covid had taken the lives of three significant others. Should I notify the UC’s and CSU before or after the decisions. Thanks for the help!
I still do not know why your HS would allow you or schedule you into the CP Calculus course since you have completed 2 higher level Calculus courses already. You have extenuating Medical circumstances and I would try to get a retroactive Medical withdrawal from CP Calculus and see if the grade can be removed from your HS transcript.
I would also email CSU and UC admissions earlier than later and explain the situation. Since you have already passed the Higher level Calculus courses, I think they will be lenient on your situation but notify them just in case the D shows up on your HS transcript. UC’s especially do not like surprises later.
Should I update the UC via portal or email? I think they will be lenient this year because of Covid-19. For CSU they are lenient not sure about UC’s. I will notify them with a letter and documentation of taking other classes than make up for my D+. Hopefully I do not get rescinded. Wish me good Luck! Thanks for the help!
If you are able to update on the student portal, then I would do it there. If not, then email admissions.
Best of luck.
Hello I did some research and it says for CSU’s, “• A grade of C or higher in the second semester validates a D or F earned in the first semester”.
This is from the Freshman Coursework Entry Guide 2020 - 2021
Can someone please take a look and let me know if this will work in my case.
Thank you so much for the help!
Yes for Math the CSU’s offer grade Validation, same as the UC’s. The issue becomes you have already fulfilled your Calculus requirement with the CC Calc I and AP Calc AB so they will question why are you retaking the classes. Also any D Senior year needs to be reported as soon as possible if it is on your transcript regardless. It probably will not be an issue, but nonetheless you need to be proactive and let the schools know before they see the final transcripts. You can wait until you have your decisions but do not wait too long.
From the UC website: If there are changes to your academic record:
If you change schools, add or drop a course, or fail to earn a C or better in a course after you submit your application, you must notify the campuses you’ve applied to (all campuses except UC Berkeley). If you receive an offer of admission, be sure to confirm with the campus admission office that they are aware of the deficient grade or schedule changes.
There is also the provisional
admission contract for any school if accepted where it states you need to pass all Senior year classes with no D’s or F’s.
Should I wait till after my decisions for the UC’s and CSU’s or let them know before my decisions?
This is a judgement call and I would prefer to be proactive and find out if the D will be an issue now than later but since decisions should be coming within the next month, you can wait until all decisions are posted. I would not wait until the SIR date May 1 to notify any of the schools since you want to have a backup in case it is an issue.
If I do notify them before admissions will it hurt my application and it will be included in the review of my application?
Yes it could impact your admissions to some of the schools but if it is going to impact them now, it will certainly impact them later after decisions are posted. Like I said it is a judgment call on your part and a judgement call for each school to determine how to proceed. If you want to wait that is fine, but do not wait too long. Have you gotten any admissions decisions? If so, you could just contact admissions and see what they say about the grade. Kinda get a feel if this will be an issue.
I am sure the schools will be wondering why you are retaking a class where you have already received in A and probably want an explanation so you should get your documentation ready (Dr. notes/report, Counselor recommendation etc…)
If I do let them know after the admissions I could work with the colleges that accepted me. If I notify them before there is a possibility they will auto reject me. I have notified few schools via portal and I have got no email about any problem. I notified one school via email and they said we will keep this is mind when reviewing you final report. and said it is important that you have learned and will be helpful in the future.
Each campus will handle it differently and they do not autoreject unless you do not meet CSU/UC eligibility. I see really no problem since you have already passed a higher level class but competitive campuses are sticklers when it comes to provisional admission contracts. You have around up to 6 weeks before you hear from all the UC’s and CSU’s, so once you made a decision where to attend, you can contact the school and see what if any issue exists. Just do not wait until you have to finalize a decision and have the school comeback and say it will be an issue. Give them as much notice as possible.
Thanks for the heads up. I have notified one UC campus right now to see the outcome. They will come back with a response within 2-3 weeks I will see how it goes. Thanks you so much for the help and support!
Best of luck and please update when you get more information.
Will do! Thank You!
