Senior Year has always seemed like a long way down the road for me. Although it does seem like it won't arrive I want to get some early info.

How much do Senior Year grades count?

Do colleges look at 2nd semester to determine you admittance?

Do colleges look thoroughly through 1st semester grades?

Will 1st semester grades be averaged into your GPA?

How much weight will it cause? Since i'm assuming that colleges only take 1st semester, do they weight whatever average you got in half?

For example, freshmen, soph, and junior year have been all full years. But senior year grades have only made it half through. So do colleges like half the weight of the senior year grades? or do they just count it normally as if you went through an entire regular school year?

I personally think they care roughly as much about the rigor of courses as the actual grades, atleast for 1st semester. Your grades in the second semester will always be looked at for rescinding purposes.

And 1st semester grades should be averaged into your GPA, as your school will send an updated transcript as part of the mid-year report. Both your actual senior grades and updated GPA will be shown.

And colleges will weight senior first semester as a semester because that’s what it is. It wouldn’t make sense for it to count as a full year, or two semesters. But colleges really don’t look at it in the context of full years either, as your grades and what factors into your GPA are based on semesters.

There are tons of threads on this sort of thing. Search up “Senior grades”, “Mid-Year Report”, etc.

*“How much do Senior Year grades count?” * Quite a bit – these should be your most advanced classes and are the most predictive of college success

"Do colleges look at 2nd semester to determine you admittance? " No. But if you fall off the cliff, they can and do rescind students.

"Do colleges look thoroughly through 1st semester grades? " * Yes. See #1

"Will 1st semester grades be averaged into your GPA? " Absolutely. It’s 1 out of 7 semesters worth of grades. Your Culm GPA will include this figure. And if your school gives extra weight to AP/IB courses, it’s your moment to shine (hopefully).

Pretty sure I answered the exact same way for those first few questions in the OP’s other thread, which he apparently mostly reposted again lol (I guess I don’t have enough cred yet)

You really don’t need to ask more questions about this until you’ve already searched up and read some other threads. There are countless ones to look at about this topic. Fun times

All of this is driving me nuts!
My school averages gpa differently. We do have 1st and 2nd semesters but the grades for 1st semester aren’t final.

Whatever you get in the 1st semester carries onto the 2nd semester. You don’t start off with fresh grades in the 2nd semester. So i got a 91 for 1st semester and a 93.5 for 2nd semester. The 91 won’t count because that grade was integrated into the 93.5, all i did to raise the 91 was to work extra hard.

This is why i keep noting “full years” because half years at my school won’t make sense when everything is averaged in.

Without the transcript in front of us, it’s hard to know how exactly your school goes about listing grades and averaging GPA. I don’t think I’ve yet encountered someone whose 2nd semester doesn’t start fresh and separate from 1st semester. Nor have I known about a school that solely lists full year grades, but I guess you may be an exception. I do know about schools that list the semesters as well as the full year grades, but GPA is pretty much always by semester.

Anyway, this is a question best suited for your guidance counselor or some form of registrar at your school. My guess is that they’ll still send a mid-year report with the grades for 1st semester included, and possibly weight the GPA of those classes on your updated transcript 1/2 as much as the full years. They’ll probably also make it clear on the transcript how all other grades listed are full years, but those senior 1st semester grades are obviously not. I’m honestly not sure though, so go ahead and ask your GC to clarify

Talk to your GC to see what is on your transcript when sent at different stages of the application process. Our school only lists end of year grades for previous years, however whenever a transcript is run whatever current grades are for that quarter, semester, etc. in the current year are going to show up. So your mid-year report is going to show year end grades for years 9-11 and first semester for Sr. year. Some schools recalculate rank at the end of the year only, some will recalculate rank at each grading period. A transcript has to be sent with the application, which let’s say is November. That would show year-end for 9-11 and first quarter grades for Sr. year. Every school is different so clarify with your GC.

I understand what you are saying about first semester carrying over for the final year end grade. It’s kind of semantics. Our students get a first semester grade which is put into 4.0/3.0 form, etc. It is then averaged with the second semester grade (also converted to 4.0 format) to get a year end grade. Although they aren’t using the numerical grade for the average to get your year end grade it’s the same premise…first and second semester are going to be combined to get a year end grade. Every school is going to get there differently, but they are all going to combine them somehow.

thank you SAT128 and thank you as well blueiguana.

Also, my school doesn’t rank. do colleges have a rough rank for me?

and how about if i’m in one of the “above average” high schools in america?

I attend Brooklyn Tech, which is located in New York City. It requires an admissions test that is like an 8th grade version of the SAT. The test is called SHSAT if you’re just wondering… (specialized high schools admissions test). I think it’s ranked 63, it used to be ranked in the 30s range but it dropped.

So do i have a little bit of a curve, and will admissions officers take into an account that my course’s that I take such as regular bio class, will be harder than other “average schools” bio class?
