I'm currently a sophomore in high school and have always wanted to go to a service academy. I have a 4.4 cumulative GPA weighted and a 3.9 unweighted GPA. I take honors courses in Spanish, History, Chemistry, Trigonometry, and English. I plan to take two to three AP courses next year. I am a Varsity football player along with being a Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track member. I go to a very competitive school where we have graduated many service academy grads. Also, I'm in a leadership club, NHS, and I tutor and mentor freshman coming into the school. I got a 1720 on the SAT, with a 650 on critical reading, a 610 on math, and a 450 on writing, which is obviously my weakness. I also plan on joining student council this year.I also coach youth football in my local community. I was wondering what my chances were of getting into a service academy, preferably USMA or USNA.

I would recommend SAT or ACT tutoring if you can afford. Bringing up your math and CR scores to the 700 range will make admissions likely as your other stats look strong.

Thank you for your quick reply. I thought that my Sat scores would bring me down and I signed up for a course in April and will retake the SAT’s soon. One follow up however, would my writing skill be that much of a problem.

From what I have gathered from the SA and ROTC adnissiions process is that they will mostly If not solely look at Math and CR (English) scores. They couldn’t care less about writing or science sections.

Have you taken the ACT? If not I highly recommend it. I went in to my BGO interview for USNA with him only knowing my SAT scores, he was skeptical of my chances. Needless to say after I informed him of my ACT scores he said I was triple qualified. (Medical, Academic, Physical) Moral of the story, take both tests as some students perform leaps an bounds better on one than the other. Since you are a Sophomore you have lots of time to develop your application for the SA’s. Join clubs and get leadership positions. Strive to be captain of your sports teams. Keep that GPA up and improve your test scores (you have plenty of time and I’m sure you will) and I will hopefully see you on the high seas in 7 years!
