I called in and I was 12 points off the cutoff, I had 7732 points and the cutoff was 7744. For those of you that dont know about the points, this is basically the difference between one or two SAT answers.

I was put on the waitlist but heard you can appeal and still be on the waitlist. I didn't put co-captain of varsity basketball on my application and I won award in the league right after applications were due. Would that be enough?

It’s up to you, you might get in, you might not. But honestly, another college might be better suited for you, one where you can excel in more. However, if your heart is set on UCSD, then go for it. You might have to wait until you officially get denied though, I’m not sure if you can appeal while on the waitlist. Also, where did you hear that the point cutoff was 7744?

I called admissions today and they confirmed that the cutoff was 7744. My son got 7,588 and was not offered a position on the waitlist. For 12 pts I would probably appeal if you feel very strongly about going to UCSD. For my son, I think we’ll just have him attend Cal Poly Pomona where he’ll be more at the “top” of the class rather than just scraping by to get in.

^Soosra: you have good stats so it could be worth an appeal in my opinion. Good luck!

^I called as well. What was the cutoff for wait list?

This is my response from rejected thread

They give me all their admissions stats and stuff and how they had to turn down good students, etc… Then for my application, I was at like 7595, the cut off was like 7744. I got points for my GPA, SAT’s, some summer stuff, some leader ship, some special stuff. I don’t think they gave FULL points in the EC categories such as special, summer, cs, etc… I think I got a little of each which is what held me back. But the guy said, looking up and down, the GPA was the biggest factor holding me back… (■■■). He also said Major did not matter and the decisions were independent of all UC’s, so CC was right on that.

So, anyway, with that point total, did I even have a realistic chance? I knew my GPA was going to screw me over. That was the easiest to control… =(

^The Legend, they mentioned my son’s gpa several times as a major factor (3.55 w) and we knew that with his gpa it was going to be a long shot, but he seriously only needed partial points in one other area and he would’ve had it. He had a 28 on his ACT and they gave him 1830 for it. I felt like they could’ve been a little more generous with that, but whatever. It still wouldn’t have given him the 156 more points he needed.

You should definitely consider appealing, soosra. Being co-captain of your varsity basketball should put you over the cut-off and give you a shot. They give insane points for holding leadership positions - team captain, editor of newspaper/yearbook, president of a club, etc.

There’s still a chance they won’t out-right accept you, but it’s worth a shot.
