I am becoming a 9th grader this year and want to take Geometry Honors and Algebra 2 together, but I don’t know if it’s a good idea. All my other friends would be taking Algebra 2 this upcoming school year. Doubling up would mean that I cannot participate in band since Algebra 2 would be replacing one of my electives. I was in Algebra 1 Honors in 8th grade and passed with an A. I am also taking Biology Honors, History Honors, and English Honors in 9th grade so I’m worried that I won’t be able to handle it all. I took all Honors classes in 8th grade and passed with all A’s. Would it be worth it to double up?
Depends upon your interests.
Do you enjoy participating in band ? Or is math more exciting to you ?
You should be able to handle both Geometry Honors & Algebra 2 if you enjoy math.
Whether it would be worth it depends upon your reasons for wanting to double up on math courses as a 9th grader. For example, if you want to become a math tutor, then yes it is worth it.
This is a good idea if you are planning to go into STEM for your major in college and you’re reasonably sure you can handle two math classes. If you’re planning to go into a different major, however, it should be fine to skip it since you’ll still finish high school at a reasonably high math course if you don’t double up (most likely AP calculus AB or perhaps AP Calculus BC). Personally I’m doing this as a Sophomore just because I don’t want to be behind in math for all of high school, although I’m not going into STEM. So in short, if you want to do STEM in college, it’s worth it, but if you’re doing something else, you’ll be fine with just Geometry.
First do you enjoy band and want to continue? It is a nice ec to continue and may fulfill some elective requirements (and some colleges do like seeing a music or art class) Lots of people love the band and develop great friendships from band. If you do enjoy it there is no need to drop band. If you are tired of practicing, don’t enjoy it, it may be a good time to stop. My high school requires 2 years of credits from music, art, business, and technology classes to graduate.
Your on track to complete Calculus in high school which is enough for almost every single college. If your school does BC as a combo of AP Calculus AB and BC then you can still finish with AP Calculus BC. Your other classes all sound like traditional 9th grade classes for good students. Are you taking a language class? Remember even the ivy league schools are okay with 4 years of all 5 core subjects and don’t have expectations that you will stick to only core subjects. Either is fine just don’t give up on band already if you love it.
