"What does a UF student and an FSU student have in common?

They both got into FSU"

Gloating over the selectivity of a Florida public school is a bit silly considering that anyone with a 3.0+ GPA at a CC can easily get in anywhere, other than a few limited access majors at certain schools (i.e. Engineering at UF, Film at FSU).

Close to half of the UF student body just transfers over from a community college (like every other Florida public school). Some proud gators like to dismiss the other good Florida schools as being havens for “UF rejects,” but UF itself is the ultimate destination for most UF rejects, care of Santa Fe.

I’m not here to begin a big discussion. It was a joke. I thought I had a right to one since other users made some as well.
That’s a rather large claim, considering all state schools are partial to transfers including FSU, it doesn’t matter what CC students come from. I am a CC transfer but I got accepted to both FSU and UF as a high school senior. My choice to attend my local CC ( I live in Sorrento) was purely financial. My parents and myself found it to be more economical to do the CC route and transfer, thus saving a lot of money. My stats were great during high school and currently.

I did not come on this forum to start an UF vs FSU war. There’s enough of that. I simply gave my two cents to the poster. But it’s obviously you FSU students/alumni on this forum are very hostile.

I hope the poster picks the school most appropriate for them and good luck on your educational endeavors!

I don’t personally find the FSU posters in this FSU forum particularly hostile. I do though regularly find the UF posters here lacking in sense of humor. Perhaps that is a byproduct of their taking themselves too seriously.

Daysi91: I wasn’t trying to belittle CC transfers. I am one myself. I’m just responding to the old All-Other-Florida-Schools-Are-For-UF-Rejects trope that UF students love to throw at other schools.

No one cares for your sob story Daysi.
You haven’t even spent a single school day in either university.
So your opinions are meaningless.
OP obviously wanted opinions of current or past students.
Thank you for your unnecessary input.

@Daysi
FSU students/alumni hostile? I don’t think so. I’ve mostly noticed FSU students/alumni on this forum giving very helpful and resourceful advise. I’ve noticed many do like to joke and have a little fun on the forum in regards to UF/FSU beef, but it is not meant to be taken seriously and get upset about.

Days91-- FWIW P2N is a fabulous poster on CC. She’s a “homer” but she is informed and knows what she’s talking about. FSU is solid, don’t let anyone degrade the degree. My 2nd in line just received a FSU math BS and will continue this fall in their masters mathematics program. Go 'Noles!

Honestly, it ultimately doesn’t really matter where you end up going. The differences in the schools are pretty minimal quality wise, especially if you’re aiming to go to Med school- which pretty much focuses all on your GMAT and GPA. The med schools you will apply to won’t care where your degree is from, what they will care about is the quality of your work.

Quite honestly, my advice would be to go to whichever school you like better that is within your budget. If you feel like UF is better, go there. While I believe FSU is better than UF, I know that the place isn’t for everyone.

I’m going to be brutally honest here: the only people that will ultimately care what college you went to will be you and likely only a few family members and friends, and maybe a couple future employers. You could probably count the number of people on your hands that actually care where you go to school for your undergrad if you’re going to med school.

It sounds to me though like the pros and cons you came up with are rather poor. For each school.

“I’m going to be brutally honest here: the only people that will ultimately care what college you went to will be you and likely only a few family members and friends, and maybe a couple future employers”

And in the case of future employers, they are not going to really distinguish between FSU and UF unless you are majoring in a field where one school has a major advantage over the other, OR unless the employer is an alumnus of one of the schools and prefers his or her own.

To me UF is noticeably better. For example, UF has the highest ranked med school in the state, according to US news. They have the second best psych program, and the best programs in the sciences. UF ranks in the 30s for chem and physics, while FSU is in the 40s. UF has over 30 physicists working at CERN, one of the highest out of any university in the world. We’re in the top five universities for the transfer of biotech to the marketplace. And we also have the best engineering program in the state, and second in the southeast, behind GT. If all else equal, go to UF

UF isn’t only ag and engineering. We’re the best for sciences, the best for medicine (only Miami is equal), the best for engineering, the best for business, etc. FSU is only better for a few specific things. Plus, UF has more research funding than all of the state’s public universities combined. Look it up.

“FSU is only better for a few specific things.” ie meteorology. For medicine, UF is way better, and their students match to much better residencies than their FSU peers. UF has a science for life program to foster undergraduate research. UF has a better biology program, chemistry program, and physics program. At my school, students majoring in bio, chem, physics, comp sci, or engineering chose UF over any other school in FL.

Match up to better residencies? Could post where you found that information please. It would make it easier for the OP so they can factor that in, in their decision.

“UF has more of a national reputation than FIU or FSU.”

UF has more prestige than FSU within the state Florida – primarily in South Florida. It is only within the imaginations of Floridians that either school is nationally known for anything other than football and partying. Outside of the state, people get the two confused all the time. I have personally witnessed this on numerous occasions.

Both UF and FSU are well-known nationally, but only as “big football schools.” Remember, neither school was particularly selective until after the Bright Futures scholarship began in the mid 1990s.

I realize now that you actually included FIU in your statement, ever so deftly lumping them together with FSU I grew up in Central Florida and never even heard of FIU until the last couple of years, when I began to research Florida schools. Nothing against FIU. People in South Florida probably feel the same way about UCF, which Central Floridians think is terrific.

I would not go to UF for physics, either. Chemistry…toss up. Biology…toss up. Engineering - yes, UF has the better program. Med school…toss up; even with FSU having a new med school. Law - FSU edges UF out; even though UF has the much older school. Political science - FSU kills UF. Criminology - FSU kills UF. Math…toss up.
Music - ha; UF?? seriously?? - LOL. Psychology - FSU has the oldest program in Florida and I bet the best; even over the program in Hogtown.

A lot of the UF fans cite the med school monies. Fine. UF has the oldest state med school - having started in the mid-50s while Florida State’s started in 2000. Takes time to ramp this up. FSU has the only National Laboratory in Florida and the highest investment of NSF monies of all Florida schools.

As the parent of an M4 med student who came through the FSU Honors and undergrad research track - well, D1 selected FSU over UF due to the undergrad research opportunities. That’s voting with your feet by a young consumer. We have family ties to UF so she was encouraged to go there if she wanted. Nope. Tally it was.
