Well my mom wants me to play high school football. I don't want to play because my school team sucks and if i play i will have to be on the freshman team even though with my size and strength i could easily make varsity i planned on playing but i think that i would have more fun in clubs so would football look better than clubs on a application

Don’t play because your mom tells you to. Don’t play because it will look good for colleges.
However, don’t avoid it because your team sucks, either.

Sports are about the love of the game, imo. I quit playing baseball after a number of years for a reason that was pretty stupid, not like I was bad at it or anything. A couple people here could put two and two together lol.

But anyways, I think you should play football if you like to play. Don’t strand yourself in other clubs just to look better for college, especially if you could make varsity and be a Letterman.

I actually disagree with LMU - if your team sucks, and constantly loses, then you will gradually come to dislike playing the sport. Play where you will have fun, that way you will keep loving the game.

if you dont want to play, dont. but since your team stinks, maybe you can be the star of the squad. what position do you play?

im a defensive lineman so i dont think im gonna be a star lol

Who cares what your mom wants you to do?

if you end up with a 4.0/2300 football is going to set you apart at Ivies, because most of the other 4.0/2300 kids wouldn’t touch football

Make some decisions for yourself, jeez. Don’t ask your mom; don’t ask this board.

do not play football to make it an EC. play football because you want to play football. be aware however that it is a very large time commitment. you will practise during prime hw hours and come home mentally and physically tired.

I disagree with powerbomb. My team has ranged between 1 and 2 wins in the last several seasons, yet I have enjoyed my experience in football tremendously. I have gotten to play alongside some of the finest and most honourable men I’ve ever known and become friends with people who lie outside my normal social sphere (public IB magnet programme within the school). Not to mention, it’s fun to smack the sh1t out of people and get cheered on for doing so (esp. on the DL)!

D-Line is a position where you can make a name for yourself. Ever hear of Albert Haynesworth? lol. But seriously, it’s one of the line positions in which you can put up personal stats (tackles, sacks, tackles for loss, etc.) whereas on o-line the skill players get all the glory.

i dont like haynesworth. he deliberately stepped on andre gurode’s (from the dallas cowboys) head with his metal cleats. but there no denying his talent

i know that. im not such a big fan, and im a redskins person.

im just stating an example of how d linemen can be “superstars” as OP put it.

Agree with everyone else, if you want to play football, go ahead. However, if the team sucks and you know you wouldn’t enjoy it, then play another sport or wait until you can play varsity. I started to play soccer in 9th grade for the first time since I wanted to get some exercise, and I realized I was actually pretty good. I’m going for varsity next year (I was on JV 10th and 11th, thirds in 9th) so it’s not a bad achievement!

Personally I recommend cross-country but really its your freshman year so why not go for it. In my opinion, fresh year is good for trying a new sport to see if you like it because if you do like it you have time to develop it for the next few years but if you don’t like it then you didn’t really waste too much time on it and also frosh sports are maybe not as intense so its good way to ease in and get your toes wet.

dude im a defensive lineman do i sound like i enjoy running

You’re a defensive lineman or your mom wants you to be a defensive lineman?

" I actually disagree with LMU - if your team sucks, and constantly loses, then you will gradually come to dislike playing the sport. Play where you will have fun, that way you will keep loving the game. "

Well, look at the last line. Why is FUN dependent on winning/losing? It doesn’t have to be. I’ve been on winning/very losing teams. I’ve watched my little sister as a softball player on a team go winless. She ended up making All Stars and had a ton of fun. Being on a team in itself in high school can also make it fun.

my mom know nothing about football she wants me to be the guy who doesn’t get hit i have played defensive lineman and that is the position i will most likely play but no i am not a d-lineman right now

as a d-lineman you might get pancaked or cut-blocked by a really strong o-lineman. but thats better than being tackled

all o-lineman are fat @$$es

Play only if you want to play. The thing I hate most about football is people who go and don’t enjoy it, but stay on the team for some idiotic reason.
