The last time I took it I got a 690. Would it be worth it to retake and get around a 730-750? Or will it not make much of a difference in gaining admission.

I AM NOT ASKING ABOUT THE MATH 2C, I AM ASKING ABOUT THE MATH 1C.

It won't make much of a difference.
Sometimes, you're lucky, and you get good questions. Sometimes, you aren't.

I took it thrice:
600,
660,
770

I got VERY lucky.

depends where you are applying and stuff...

I plan on applying to selective programs where the competition is tough.

The best thing to do is actually take IIC and see how you do. I know a lot of selective schools really do prefer IIC, but if you really do prefer IC, then go ahead and try again. It never hurts you. :)

Yes, a high II will make up for a low I, most certainly.
I have a friend who scored 600 on I, but 720 on II.
Which is still pitifully low, but acceptable.

I haven't done precalc yet, so II is out of the question. But do you guys think that a extra 30-40 points will help make a difference in admissions?

if you're certain that you will get a higher score then go ahead but if not then i would just focus on the other subjects

Besides engineering-type programs (and the UCs which will not accept Math 1), post evidence please?

Don't bother retaking. Do well on the 2c and you will be fine.

"We recommend (but do not require) that you submit official results of at least two SAT Subject Tests, as these additional scores often assist us in our evaluation process. You are welcome to submit any and all SAT Subject Tests you have completed. We do not have a preference for the specific SAT Subject Tests you elect to take. However, if you elect to take a math test, we do prefer to see the Math Level 2 test if you feel that your math background has adequately prepared you for this test."

^However, my math background is lacking. I think I can get 40 points higher, but I just want to know whether it will make a difference in admissions?

40 points isn't a grand difference, but it isn't something stupid like 10 points. In my opinion, you might as well take it unless you A) don't have the money or B) have something planned the day of the SAT.

^on the june sat, I will already be taking chem so...its just a matter of if I want to or not. I will probably take it, because I think I can do better. Any other advice?

bump.......I don't plan on taking 2c. Any other advice?

if you're already taking something, might as well take the thing you want to improve in again. it's only 10 bucks more per subject

How should I prepare for the math I test? any one know any good books?

Princeton Review.
It'll prepare you for both.
