Should I retake the SAT a third time? (Just got my results...)

I just got my results back for the March 9th SAT, and I got a combined 2080. :/ This is the same exact score I got in the December SAT, although I studied a lot more for this one. I'm a junior and my junior year PSAT was a 233, so my counselor was surprised at my SAT score because she said that PSAT, which I didn't study for in the slightest, is often a fairly accurate indicator. I'm really upset with getting the same score because I know that I can do better and that I have in practice tests.

December SAT:
R: 800
M: 670
W: 610 (?)

March SAT:
R: 730
M: 640 (???)
W: 710

Is it alright for me to take the SAT a third time? And also, how do you see the score you got on your essay on College Board's website? Thanks!

You have a 2180 superscore. It comes down to where you want to.go and how you stack up to.other applicants in other areas. If possible, compare yourself to past applicants from your school.

SurvivorFan said it best: It depends on where you are applying. Look up the average SAT scores (individual distribution is important - look at math, reading, and writing independently) for the colleges you are going to - afterall that’s what the SAT is for. This number will tell you that the people with these scores have a fair chance of getting in from the SAT factor - some of them are in, and chances are there are some with those exact scores that didn’t.

Honestly, it’s not as bad as you think!

Your scores:
Reading: 800
Math: 670
Writing: 710

Your CR+M score, 1470, is very impressive for any school. A lot of people wold get 800 math and 670 in reading, so you’re clearly excellent in reading. You should just take Math subject tests to demonstrate your ability in math.

Thank you for the quick replies! I was really hoping for a higher score the second time around, though, and I’m not sure why I didn’t get a higher one considering all the practice that I did this time. I literally went through two entire practice books and wrote dozens of essays. Do you guys think that if I do end up taking it a third time, my score will actually change? Or is this possibly my maximum potential?

Bump? (Sorry, is that allowed?)

Although a super score of 2180 is very good, I would suggest you to re-take it if that fits your schedule. Here are the reasons:

 1. Some schools do not super score but look at the best single seat score. You are getting 2080 in both that would be about or below average for top schools.
 2. Your PSAT score indicates you could do better in SAT than 2080.
 3. Get accepted by a decent university is not a problem, but better scores may be required for merit scholarship.

Okay, thanks for your help! My concern was that some schools don’t superscore? And also a 2180 is only average for some of the schools I’m seriously interested in. However, I don’t know where to go from here!!! Do I just keeping taking more practice tests?

I would definitely suggest retaking it. Practice tests are the best way you can prepare for the SAT - just make sure that when you’re practicing, you simulate test conditions as closely as possible. Otherwise, it’ll be of no use. I speak from personal experience here when I say that practice test books didn’t help me much because honestly, I never really took their tests under test conditions. When I did a test prep program, though, every practice test was under simulated test conditions, and those were what really helped me improve my score. Good luck!

If you are applying to top 20 unis/lacs, then you’ll want to clear 700 on the M score.

Try Gruber’s prep. Or the xiggi method for practice.

Besides your PSAT score, how was your average practice score? I can definitely understand how frustrated you are. My daughter got 2300+ in the last several practice tests before her first attempt while she got only 2090 in her real test. She retook in March and she was still ~80-100 below her expectation. If your practice score is consistently over 2200, I would suggest you to retake it in Fall for the final attempt. It is not that 2080 (or 2180 in super score) is not good, but you should aim for the score that better reflects your ability. On the other hand, did you take ACT too? That may be a good alternative for you.

Yes, retake it as long as you truly believe you can do better. But if you feel like you’ve reached your limit then don’t.
