I just finished my freshman year of college. For the fall 2013 semester I was at a university that I did not like but finished with a 3.6 GPA and made dean's list. I transferred to a state school for the spring 2014 semester because it was cheap and I thought that I could figure out where I really wanted to be for my sophomore year and just finished there with a 3.6 GPA and dean's list. My absolute dream school is Boston University (I applied ED out of high school got rejected, applied as a transfer and got rejected) I want to go to BU so badly but they keep rejecting me. (I had a 88 unweighted GPA in high school and a 104 weighted GPA). I also like NYU and Northeastern.

My main question is this: I could go to a private college next year and pay $25,000 a year but I'm not crazy about the school at all and stay there for my remaining 3 years (it's not a bad school it's just not a school i am crazy about). OR I could stay at the state school my sophomore year (costing me about $7000 a year) and apply to BU again and try to get in for my junior year.

Do you think I should go to the private school I'm not crazy about or should I stay at the state school (it's not a very good school) and regroup myself and apply to schools for my junior year?

Oh and currently I’m double majoring in English and French!

After being rejected twice, your chances of getting in as a transfer are nil. You can reapply to transfer schools, but take BU out of your thinking and out of the equation.

:( Yeah I know it just sucks so bad because I have the grades for the school too and I do SO much. You think they would reject me if I applied again definitely? What do you think about my chances for NYU or Northeastern? @AmaranthineD

Chances for BU and NU are about equivalent… it would be hard to imagine you getting into NYU but crazier things have happened. You could be competitive for NU or NYU though depending on the reputation of your state school, admissions are hard to predict.

@Vlklngboy11 Really? Even as an English/Comm major for NYU and NU and with a 3.67 GPA? I also have a 1950 SAT (670M 610CR 670W)

What’s your current school?
What’s your financial situation - say, if you got into NYU and didn’t get a scholarship, would your parents be able to pay $60,000 a year for the last 2 years? What about CCNY?
For French, check out your department’s offerings: many colleges have very few classes above Upper Intermediate (202) and a major only starts after that level… so that would be a legitimate reason to transfer.
Forget about BU. But there are lots of similar schools in big, dynamic cities with strong English/language programs: NYU as you said, but also CUNY schools, Fordham, Tulane, Northeastern (although not the best for English…), UMiami, American University, Pitt, UMN-Twin Cities…
If you’re a girl, check out Simmons, Mills, Agnes Scott…

Why not stay at your state school and apply to places? If you don’t get in you’re still a school you like instead of that private school that you don’t like.

@MYOS1634 @Caliboy1234 I’m currently in a state school but it’s a less prestigious one, I just came here because I wanted to save money and apply to schools for the Fall 2014 Semester. So far I got accepted into UConn, Simmons College, Emmanuel College, CUNY city college and Fairfield University. I’m still waiting on Northeastern (hopefully next week) and then got rejected from BU. I’m guessing northeastern will reject me too because they rejected me for my freshman year also.

I don’t know if I should commit to UConn (I live in CT so it’s in state tuition) because that is the best school out of all of them or wait at the very less prestigious state school and apply to NYU for next year. I probably won’t get into NYU.

I’m surprised you got rejected with a 3.6. I applied with a 3.56 and got accepted two weeks after i sent in my application. I think I’m deciding against it though because I only got 10,000 from the school and it costs about 60,000 per year to attend. The main reason I wanted to apply was because it is ranked 41st on u.s. news and world report and because they offer a good mathematics department. (Secretly because of the 60/40 gender ratio in favor of women). Then I read a bunch of student reviews of how the school is known to reduce financial aid awards given to students in subsequent years. And the Grade Deflation is present more so in BU (Especially the Engineering Departments) than anywhere else.

Why is BU your dream school?

For NYU (also a 60/40 gender ratio) if you applied to CAS I’d say you have a good chance of being admitted. because you’re GPA is directly below the average transfer GPA. (I personally was just denied from NYU CAS though). NYU is a great school for math majors like myself but it is also extremely competitive and from what I’ve heard has a very cut throat environment, but i personally think the grade inflation makes up for it (average being 3.4 I think).

I would say UConn is a safe bet no matter what you want to do because it isn’t particularly weak in any areas. I was also accepted to UConn but the education may not be worth it for out of state students ($40,000 a year). Also Being that Uconn is located in the middle of nowhere it is a big party school and many of the students are very immature (It’ll feel like high school).

For city college I know people who attend and I know that it is the best CUNY school for an undergraduate education overall (it is also very easy to get accepted). There is a lot of grade inflation and given your current GPA i’d say it will be easy to succeed in CCNY. It is not a party school at all because it is located in the middle of the city but students who attend are generally very friendly. Professors aren’t very helpful to students in any CUNY school unfortunately though.

I don’t know much about the other schools you were admitted to, good luck with your decisions!

@ gwaltxx I am literally in the same position as you. I applied to Penn and didn’t get in. However, I got into Emory. My dilemma was to stay at my school and try to get into Penn for my junior year or go to Emory now. Considering Emory was my second best choice, I decided to take Emory’s offer (with aid). Also, if you transfer into your junior year, chances are you’ll repeat sophmore year (don’t take all transfer credits. So unless you truly don’t want to go to your current options, transfer now. There are not many variables if you leave and at least 50 if you stay.

See my other thread and check other’s responses

@Ripetomato43 thank you so much for all of your help! You seriously gave me so much information hahaha I’m not sure why BU was my dream school, it was just weird as soon as I got on the campus I fell completely in love with it. I felt like I was at home whenever I was there I love the school SO much hahah ugh I would do anything to get accepted there.

I’m still currently waiting to hear back from Northeastern hopefully I’ll hear sometime this week. Right now I think it’s between UConn or Emmanuel College. I love Boston so much it’s my dream city I’m just nervous that Emmanuel’s reputation isn’t that great and I will go into debt for a school that won’t have a good reputation.

@Caliboy1234 Yeah you’re right I’d probably have to go in as a sophomore if I did apply again.

In all honesty I might just stay at my current state school and have no debt and apply to NYU, BU and Northeastern again for my junior year. I am SO conflicted ugh.

I’d choose between CCNY (if you have housing), UConn, and Fairfield.

@MYOS1634 I was really considering CCNY but I’m nervous because of the area it’s in (it’s in Harlem) and I’ve heard that it can get a little dangerous. If I get into Northeastern I’ll 100% go there I just have to wait another week to find out. Ugh.

Then you should wait and have this conversation then
