Should I take AP history

I will be a junior next year. Will be finishing sophomore with A's (92-97). I am contemplating taking AP history class. I am looking into going to an engineering school but like history. I was scheduled to take honors American history II but since getting straight A's I can qualify for AP history however, my guidance counselor and history teacher want to make sure I really want to change to the AP class. Since it will be my Junior year which is very important for college I don't want to screw up my grades. They told me that AP history is a lot of writing and not as much about memorization of history dates. So I have a few questions. I am concerned if I don't do well my first semester it will show a bad grade for my junior year. Will colleges see that at least I tried or is it better to just get A's in an honors class

Do I try it anyway and if I find out its to difficult go back to honors

just take the honors class since my focus will mainly be in math and science classes.

what kind of assignments or material is covered in AP history

My junior year is

AP language and comp
pre-cal
physics
Spanish honors 3

I had the same type of classes as you this year (junior) and I took AP US History. I don’t regret taking it, even though it wasn’t much fun, and surprisingly I got as good of a grade as I’d gotten in CP sophomore history.
For my class, we barely had to do any writing, it was just a lottt of reading and multiple choice tests and quizzes.
In my experience, I have anticipated AP classes to be soooo hard, and same with honors classes when I was younger, and really, they’ve been difficult but not as hard as I’d thought. I think you should try it out and if it does turn out to be too much, go back to honors.
