Should I take AP US History?

Should I take AP US History if I have no interest in it at all? I'm just taking it to look good on college apps, is it worth it? I'm aiming for UCLA, USC, NYU, and Boston Univerisity if that makes any difference.... Thanks!!

Did you already take some form of US history?

I don’t think that APUSH is going to make you stand out; some form of American history is pretty much standard in American high schools.

On the other hand, taking something such as World or Euro might make you stand out. A bit. I’m not sure how much one course will make you stand out though.

Yes, you should take it, regardless if you don’t like history. Just be aware of how much time you have if you are taking other AP classes.

@ IceCube: I took World History, regular.

I should add that if the alternative is not taking an AP course, then taking APUSH will look better. How much better will it look? Probably a little bit better. If it’s study hall vs. APUSH, APUSH all the way.

I should finally add that colleges generally want to see 4 history credits in HS so you should aim for 4. If APUSH helps you get there, then you should take it.

I’m just skeptical of whether one course can really tip the scales in an admissions decision. Rigor is a factor in admissions, and I suppose that having an extra AP wouldn’t hurt, but don’t expect it to help much, especially when it’s APUSH, and it’s practically required by many high schools.

I don’t really think it’s gonna make that big of a difference. And if you have no interest in it, you’re gonna be really bored when you have to sit through an hour of history every day and then go home and read history chapters. I like history and still sometimes our two hour block periods seemed never ending. If you already have some other APs I don’t think it really matters whether you take APUSH or like US History honors.

^^ Colleges don’t usually see 4 years of History lol.
Generally it is Euro/World then USH then Goverment

I think you should take it. It’s pretty easy, just a good amount of written work. You can find easier ways to get through the chapter notes, and as for the test material, just look over AAMSCO or another review book. However, the material is extremely boring. You learn about bills that were vetoed and other unimportant nonsense.

You should take AP US History and AP US Government. IMO everyone should take BOTH of those classes so people actually know what the heck they’re voting for when they’re able to.

NO.

APUSH is one of the harder AP classes. it’s not one of those classes where you could get by without being interested.

Yeah, I should have said 4 social science credits.

If you truly have no interest in it, it’s gonna be tough to get a good grade in the class. Agreed with Amandurrs.

I’m am also thinking of taking AP Lang and AP Lit my junior and senior year. AP US history would be my second AP for junior year:

Junior:
AP Lang & Comp
Honors Pre - AP Algebra II with Trig
Honors Pre- AP Chemistry
AP US History or Honors US History
Elective
Elective

I have never taken an AP class before btw

hmm. I stick with what I said and would suggest that you go with honors. However, you should really talk with upperclassmen who have already taken APUSH at your school or with the teacher you’ll have. They’ll know how hard the class is at your school for sure. Generally, though, it is a very tough class, like I’ve said.

My parents tries this crap on me. I didn’t take AP U.S. History because I didn’t like it, simple. It’ll be a waste of time. In my school students usually start taking AP classes during Junior year because they don’t want to take AP World. Sophomore year. If I choose AP U.S., I would probably fail because I have no interest in history what so ever. I wouldn’t take it if I were you. You still have senior year to take AP classes.

I’d recommend it. You’ll have to take courses you have no interest in for college as well.

APUSH does weigh more than regulars in view of colleges. However, they value grades equal (or more) to what classes you took. Each college has their own preferences.

There’s plenty of classes that are required and no one likes. It’s your choice how you deal with those type of classes.

this thread is really old guys

I haven’t read the other replies but I just took AP US last year and I can say I had no regrets.

It wasn’t particularly difficult because you really don’t need to memorize formulas to solve equations like in math/science, theres little to no need for “analyzing” pieces of work like in an English class (maybe a historical document, but you won’t need to find an innovative insight and your teacher will tell you why a particular document is significant). Its just knowing the material given to you.

I didn’t really care for history like you before last year but I took the class because it looked good for college and while it came as a shock to me at first because it was my first AP class, I quickly adjusted and I loved my teacher who was extremely passionate about what he was teaching (hes a huge civil war buff and I took his civil war class for seniors this year just because hes teaching it). If you do take it, I URGE you to do the textbook reading when assigned or try to do a lot of it, it isn’t necessary to follow the readings religiously but they are usually what the class discussions are on.

My teacher on his tests would make the tests 80% on the classroom discussions and 20% on the readings (meaning if you took great notes in class and paid attention, you could get around a B, but he would ask a few questions that you would only know if you did the reading as well to make sure you were doing the reading).

I am a senior now and I hear a lot that in college, it is recommended that you pick the teacher, not the class. And I think that could be said for highschool as well.

For the record, I won’t lie, for the first few tests I got in his class, I failed just about each one until around December where I got the picture… This wasn’t a normal class and I won’t do well without reading. From that point on I started getting B+'s and As and ended out with a 4 on the AP test.
