Should I take the SAT again?

Hey guys,

I'm currently a Junior from Northern Virginia, and have decided that William & Mary is my first choice--I'll probably apply ED. Anyway, I took the SAT for the second time in January and only my Critical Reading score improved. Right now my "super score" is 1980 (CR660, M580, W740), and though I'm pretty much satisfied with my reading and writing scores, I worry that my math score is too low for acceptance. Furthermore, I have heard W&M doesn't consider the writing portion when evaluating applications, thus making my M+CR score less impressive. I have no interest in pursuing a math or science degree in college and intend to major in English. This will probably be reflected in my application, as I currently have a B in pre-calculus and have doubled up on English classes, not to mention my leadership position in our school's Poetry Club. Because of this, my question to you is: should I bother retaking the SAT in hopes of earning a better math score? Would it look bad taking the test a third time? I am taking the ACT for the first time in April, but assuming I don't do well on it, what should I do?

Keep in mind that my class rank hovers around top 10%, though I have taken a very challenging high school curriculum so far (4 AP classes this year). Thanks for your help!

I would definitely consider retaking them… Try to get that math score to 650+

We would recommend that you decide once you get your ACT score if possible. You may do great on the ACT in which case we’ll use that score (you could even choose not to report your SAT if you chose) and you wouldn’t need to take the SAT again.

If your ACT doesn’t go well, we’d recommend you try the SAT one more time and focus on the math section (we combine your best individual components into your best composite score). Taking an SAT three times doesn’t look bad but after that, we’d tell you to stop. Taking tests five, six, seven times is not worth your time, energy and money.
