I am an incoming senior and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to take the SAT subject tests until now. I have taken the SAT and received 1370 (600 R/W, 770 Math). I am registered to take it again in June and August. However, seeing that my math score is relatively high and my intended major will be in a field of Engineering, I have decided to take the Math Level 1 and 2 subject tests. And maybe U.S History if decide to switch majors last minute. (History and Math are my two best subjects)
Seeing how I can take up to 3 tests on a single test date, would it be logical to take all 3 at once or to do Math 1 and 2 in one day, and do US History on another? The problem is that that I’m worried that colleges won’t see the scores because of the time of year I’ll be taking them. The colleges I will be applying to are UC’s and CSU’s. If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks
Also thinking about USC if I get my SAT in the high 1400’s or in the 1500’s.
There’s no point in taking both Math 1 and Math 2. Just take Math 2. June and August is plenty of time for the schools to receive your scores. Double check that the schools do receive your scores. USC never received D16’s scores, even though they were sent in September and again a few months later. Apply to USC before December 1 for merit consideration.
If you are leaning towards Engineering, take Math 2 and either Physics, Bio or Chemistry. Math 1 is a waste of time. UC’s recommend Math 2 and a science subject test. CSU’s do not consider subject tests. Take them by Oct to meet early deadlines.
Why would you register for both June and August SAT1? You should treat it as your last attempt and prepare thoroughly before the test. Score from October test would be fine for most but not all EA/ED schools. You may switch your August test to SAT2. By that time, you would know if you need to sign up for the October test or not. Also, do not take both Math1 and Math2. They are considered ONE subject.
@Gumbymom @billcsho @bouders Okay so no Math 1, just Math 2. Got it. And by October. I’ll think about physics after I receive my AP Physics 1 results because that subject is a bit iffy to me.
AP Physics 1 exam
Take SAT practice subject tests for chemistry and physics and see which you do best in. Prepare and then take that test in August, along with math 2. A US history subject test won’t help you get into engineering (at least without physics or chemistry).
As to October or November, as noted above, either is usually fine for regular admission, October is usually fine for ED or EA (but not for all that have EA or ED), and Nov tests are even sccepted for EA or ED at a number of the schools that require or recommend subject tests.
As to what to take, if you are really going for engineering and considering colleges that either require or recommend subject tests, then be aware that many of those require or recommend a math and a science for engineering, and in some of those cases the math needs to be math 2 Thus, if you want to cover all possibilities you need to take math 2 and a science; if you are considering something else then you better check the particular colleges to which you intend to apply to assure you are safe submitting something else or do not need subject tests.
Also, as to taking math 1 and 2, I agree with the above thta you should take only one of those. Schools that require or recommend two subject tests, want two in different subjects and submitting math 1 and 2 would be treated as just one subject test counting toward any two subject test requirement.
