I'm a senior applying to MIT early this year. I came here two years ago from a non-English-speaking country and I don't speak English at home. I have taken SATI twice. Both the math and writing parts were fine. But my first time verbal score is only 560. But now that my score is raised up to 660 at the second test. Should I still take the TOEFL test?

Well, about a third of entering MIT freshmen got scores between 600 and 699 (source: common data set, so clearly it's not going to destroy your application.

I feel like it could potentially be nice to get a good TOEFL score (because then MIT would consider your TOEFL score, which would presumably be relatively higher, in place of your SAT I score). But I'm not sure it's worth the hassle for you at this point in the admissions cycle.

^ ^ ^ ^

What Mollie said. :-)

I guess I'll take the November one then. It's quite a hassle too.....

Well...considering I'm probably have more knowledge than benjones and molliebatmit about this.....

oh wait...

No i don't....what they said ^^^^

Hahaha, benjones >>>> molliebatmit :)

No way, molliebatmit pwns benjones. :)

........................ interesting how this post turns out lol
from a foreigner's perspective of course :)

Well... I have already gone early action. The TOEFL site is malfunctioning, and if I register I have to go to the test center in Philadelphia next Saturday. To either molliebatmit or benjones, is it still worth the hazzel to take it? I appreciate your replies.

It's hard to say without knowing anything about the rest of your app. If you feel like everything else is strong, a 660 on verbal is certainly not going to keep you out of MIT. If you're worried about other components of your app, then having a super strong TOEFL score might balance those.

Thank you Ben. I guess I shouldn't tell you specific parts on my app cos' that feels like using a cheat code in game. But in essense: I have a fairly good 4.0+ GPA. No International awards, but 2 national medal/prize, a state medal and a bunch of regional awards. Teacher recs are very strong. I guess my ec is probably a little bit weak, because I'm concentrated on one team instead of trying to do everything and failing everything :). But would TOEFL score compensate for that????

No way guys.... sr6622 > benjones + molliebatmit

Hey Icy2,

Unfortunately I can't give advice on specific apps here, only general advice (that's why you never see me in the "chances" threads). I will say that taking the TOEFL certainly won't hurt you - but whether or not it's worth the hassle is something only you can decide.

Sorry I can't be of more help...

Mollie - in terms of posts, sr6622 does have a point... ;-) What should we do about that? (2000+ versus our collective ~1400)

lol thanks anyway, I understand your plight here.

a final touch:
Flying Spaghetti Monster = (sr6622 + benjones + molliebatmit)^infinity

Haha, well maybe I could just free up some more of my time to post on CC... wait, I don't have free time.

Hee, I'm an ardent FSM supporter. Heaven sounds super. ;)

Mmmmm beer volcano.
