Should I transfer schools before my junior year for more AP opportunities?

My school only offers 2 AP Classes (Calculus, & English), and while at the pace I'm going, I'll probably be in both, other schools that are closer to my home have about 5 - 10. Should I take advantage of this & try to transfer, or should I just stay where I'm at?

Will it cost you tuition dollars to transfer? Why would you transfer just for APs? How many kids at your current HS get admission offers to colleges you are interested in?

I go to a public school, and the school that I'm currently in isn't very competitive (I'm a sophomore, by the way).

Where do the top kids go to college? Are the other schools that you mention private? Of course I always would recommend that you also look at boarding schools which offer extensive curriculums........particularly not just APs.

I think it might be too late for boarding schools (I only have two years left!), and the schools I mentioned are public ones, but with alot of ECs, as well as APs. Oh, and of the seniors, usually one or two go to Columbia or UPenn, and the rest go to Community Colleges. Some kid went to Yale about 5 years ago, though.

so you are in your second year?

Yeah.

Do you think boarding school could still be a possible prospect, though? I doubt my parents would actually pay, however-- the reason why I've been searching for these outstanding public schools in my city myself. But, back to the original question, do you think it'd be a good idea to transfer?

You still have plenty of time to apply for boarding school and many of them offer significant financial aid. Some kids just to boarding school for their senior year. If you got started you could apply now for your final two years.

It sounds like you want to transfer and would meet other kids who are interested in APs and that alone may be worth it. There is a lot you didn't bring up....tuition cost, travel time, ability to get into the APs. Just because the school offers APs doesn't mean you have immediate access upon transfer. I would research that a little bit more. What do you do in the summer?

In the summer? Well, this summer, I was planning on doing a few ECs, and finishing up Math B (This is a course taken from sophomore - senior year... I want to finish it before junior year, which is possible).. which means I'll have to take summer school.

Taking advantage of summers for academic supplementals is good if you are limited at your HS. Sounds like you have a good plan. Boarding schools also have summer programs.......www.exeter.edu/summer/

Yes definitely do a summer advancement program. Also, try to transfer, either to a boarding school or a local better one. But make sure you will still be able to have leadership positions in ECs and make sure at least your core ECs carry through. That's the only tough bit I imagine.

finishing up Math B

I don't know what this is but is it a college level course? Have you looked into other programs for the summer that are math oriented?

No no, Math B is a High school course needed to graduate.

The NYC Math Curriculum is severely flawed, as it goes like this:

Math A (Algebra) 9th Grade
Math B 1 (Geometry/Trig) 10th
Math B 2/3(Trig continued) 11th
Pre-Calc (12th)

I'm taking 1 & 2 this year, and I just want to finish it so I can get to AP Calculus by the 12th grade.

So do you take AIME? The exam?
http://www.unl.edu/amc/

Not at my school, although I did take that AMC 8 exam, and got some certificate for it... I don't have it anymore though.. haha.

Need more opinions!!!

i wouldn't... i go to a school with like every AP possible, we always joke about transferring to a worse school. i think it probably looks better to be the big fish in a small pond than the average fish in a big pond (did that make sense at all?)

The current school I'm attending is an alternative school, by the way. My parents thought it'd be a "good" idea to send me to a school with few people.

........................

There are a bunch of magnets in NYC. Look into those.
