I'm sure the male winner will have to have gotten 8 5's. Probably the female as well.

As far as college admissions are concerned, does it truly matter whether you are the winner of this award? Only 50 people can get it, so I guess it doesn't matter too much, but...

if they announce the winners in the spring of the next year, which will probably be the spring of senior year, wouldn't it be too late to write it on your college apps?

yeah, i realized that through another person. still, you do write all the APs you've taken on the application. in the long run though, you have bragging rights i guess.

apostel365: The competition in California is stiff. You need 5 on all 8 to win I presume.
My D got 5 on 3 of those last year and is taking 4 more this year. She is debating whether or not to take the Env. Science AP as the school didn't allow her to take it as a subject. You need to score a 5 on every AP to win anyway.

In my view it might be preferable to do best on the 4 she is taking the year long class so as to score a 5 on those then to spend time on an addition AP Env. Science and get a 4 on one of the year long AP.

So I'll not encourage her to take AP Env. Science at the cost of other APs.

In the end she should be AP national scholar whether or not she take the AP Env. Science which I think will be as important as AP Siemens award as you can see some can win this award without being AP national scholar.

@ParentOfIvyHope: But the same is true the other way... you can be a National AP Scholar without being a Siemens Award winner.

As for letting colleges know, I got a letter in the mail a week or two ago officially stating I'm a winner (before, of course, the crazy Jan 1st deadlines). I'm sure you could use that for your college apps.

yeah, but i also think that ap national scholar is quite impressive. what do you need, like at least 8 APs with scores of 5 on all of them? i heard from another person that he didn't get his official letter that told him he was the winner of the AP contest until after the deadlines, so depending on the situation, you might not even be able to put it on your applications. what ever though, i would rather have alot of research experience and focus on other competitions, especially when i will take at least 6 of the 8 APs (i mean, it's not like that is a bad thing by any means).

Getting our names listed in a full page USA Today ad is pretty nice.

The ad will presumably appear in February so there's still time for seniors applying regular decision to send a copy to their colleges if that makes sense. I'm still a junior and not yet experienced with college apps.

Sorry to disappoint you guys... >.> But I'm the female winner from California, and I didn't take all 8 O.o

Calc BC, Physics C Mech, Physics C E&M, Bio, Chem, Environmental Sci...

Only 6...... Yea, I was REALLY surprised when I got the letter, cus I thought California would have a jillion people with 5s on all 8. But wahoo I guess. XD

At the risk of sounding sexist, you're female. The male winner...I would think he got 8, same as in Texas, and probably here in NY.

I was bitter over it back in July, but then I found out that I got a 1500 dollar scholarship for any NY university, so me living in NY balanced out (minus 500 dollars and a lot of prestige though)

Congratulations to all the state winners!
When will the national winners be announced? Or maybe someone here at CC has already received the letter for a national winner. Anyone?

It's ok piccolojunior. I thought the Cali female winner would've taken all eight and been WAYYYY nerdier than me. Guess not :(

I imagine the national winner as the epitomy of nerdiness with an erkel-esque (is that how you spell it)? appearance. har har. no offense. There are plenty of normal looking nerds. xp

Question: so in order to qualify for this award, you need to take ALL eight tests, and score a 5 on at least 2 of them?

xlxjuliexlx - Congatulations. You are the only female with the # of exams and scores needed to come up on top. You. The only one. Well done.
With the passage of Senate Bill 777 you may very well be the last physical female to be the "female" winner in your state. Thus, you have also most certainly made history!

Wow, was comment #57 terribly sarcastic or is it just me? Anyhow, congrats to xlxjuliexlx!

You're only able to take 5 APs per year at my school, because we have a 4x4 schedule (you can take AP Music Theory or a language like AP Chinese outside of school).

You meant 5 AP classes per year, not 5 exams per year, right?
You don't have to take the classes to take the exams. My school offers 4 out of those 8 AP classes - stat, chem, bio, & calc BC. It has env. sci, but not AP level. Phys B, but no C. and no CS at all. My guess is that this situation is quite common in most public schools. Am I right?
The point is: don't wait for your school to provide the classes or give the permission, if you really want to learn or take the exams. Find the way to take the classes elsewhere (community college, 4-yr college, online classes, etc.) or study on your own, if you have time and motivated.

^Many people actually do this, but I don't have time! I'd rather play sports & take 2-3 AP classes per year. If I didn't, it'd be a different story.

Does anyone know when the list is "officially" out or when the ad is? My dad is like... hounding me and going crazy -___-^ sigh
