Any updates on Simons acceptances?

Garcia program notices came out today

What is the difference between the two, Garcia vs. Simon. Which one is harder to get in ?

I believe Simons has a marginally lower acceptance rate. The Simons acceptance rate is ~14%, while Garcia’s is supposedly around 20%, or slightly lower.

The difference is that the Garcia Program focuses on materials science engineering research, although in reality, students are able to work on projects in a pretty broad range of areas. Simons, OTOH, doesn’t have one area of focus; students work with professors in various scientific fields and laboratories.

Hi guys, I received an email this morning to let me know that I was accepted to Simons. I’m from CA.

Which category did you apply for ?

Computer science. I’m from Southern California.

Can you please post your stats, simons 2013?

Just for anyone interested in updates, I was also just accepted into Simons today; a professor called and had a phone interview around a week ago but past that this is the first that I’ve heard from the program (no arranged mentors). I’m actually also from California, around the Bay Area, so I don’t think they favor the NY too heavily.

Which field did you apply to, aynora ?

I was also accepted to Simons today! I’m from New York. I had no interview/contact from the program before receiving my acceptance, but I did have an pre-arranged mentor that I have been working with for the past two years, so this may be why. I don’t think the program favors NY students, but I do think more NY students apply, which is why there are a lot of them in the program (since SB is on some random little island lol)

Those who got accepted, can you pls post your stats and the city/state you are from ?

for those accepted: will you be dorming or commuting?

Dorming! Even if it is possible to commute, from previous experience, I can say that dorming is such a great experience :)

congrats to all who got accepted

agreed! wonder how much housing will be this year haha

I think I pretty much have to dorm since I’m from California, haha.
numbersense: I’m working in optics, what about you?
quantumbyte: for anyone interested in stats, I really haven’t done any previous research, major science projects or science fairs. But I do have 6 weighted classes this year though, all A’s in high school, and I do some extracurriculars (Science Bowl, a CTY summer camp in EE, Math Club), and I think my essays helped.
Congrats to everyone else that made it! :)

For some reason, so far only the option for 7 day housing is on the Simons website. In the past, they’ve had the option of staying Monday-Friday/Sunday-Friday…they got really strict with how people got home on the weekends last year…I really hope they’re not making us stay the whole 7 weeks through because of that. (I live in L.I., so it would kind of be pointless/a waste of money)

To riffed
Thank you very much for the information, it is very helpful.

Congrats to those who got accepted.

Who got accepted and had fairly significant (at least a minor publication) previous research experience? Also not with a prof from Stony Brook. I am wondering if they favor students with none or favor students with a lot. Thanks! Also congrats to those who were accepted!
