What do they look for in SLS applicants? I'm a soph now, but I was thinking of applying next spring.

Good academic scores/class rank, leadership potential and athletic participation. If you do not have SAT/ACT scores then PSAT scores are important.

It’s a great program.

Do you have to letter in a varsity sport to participate/be a competitive applicant?

I play tennis, and I alternate between JV and Varsity, but I’m not sure whether I’ll have enough matches tallied up to letter next season.

And how can I make my application stand out?

Thanks

All you need to know about Summer Seminar:

Just one more question:

Do the medical requirements for joining the military apply for this program? Not being underweight, not having asthma, etc…or can you get a medical waiver if it applies??

Nope, you just have to be in good health so you can complete the program. SLS participants will be scheduled for their DODMERB exam later in the summer.

JustAMomOf4: Do you know if being in a varsity sport, and not lettering in the varsity sport worsen chances of getting in? (see earlier post)

Sports participation is probably enough at this point. Stick with it and be a good teammate, and the recognition will come. Couldn’t hurt to let the coach know why a letter is important to you, also.

Is there anything special I can do to make me and my application stand out?

(I don’t know if this would have any relevance but in my junior year (2010-2011), I have to do a project to graduate, and I plan to do it along the lines of teen dating violence…and to do something involving the students of my school and this…is there a section on the application to include something such as activities done for the community like this?)

bump

Not sure if there is space on the application, but if this is a project due at the end of your junior year, don’t worry about it. You’ll apply right around New Year’s of your junior year.

But is there anything else special I can do to improve chances?

(And it depends on how we’re scheduled. I might have to present my project and abstract and all that to the panel in January.)

Thanks

same i would also like to apply, but i’m not sure if i really want to miss a week of school, especially right before finals. any tips?

bump (for both the posts above )

tennis,

One of the best things you can do is make sure you focus on your grades. Also, if you plan to begin taking SAT/ACT exams during your junior year, spend some time this summer prepping for them. Great scores will help you to stand out.

In terms of sports, if you don’t play tennis all year, you might want to consider doing so in order to get more varsity time.

Good luck and keep asking questions.

collegekid,

Depending on your courses next year, IF you’re taking any AP classes, your tests will be in May. Most schools don’t have an additional final. You might be able to let your counselor know that you’ll be applying for this extremely competitive program. If accepted, perhaps the counselor can help you to arrange for early finals. It’s a tough call, but I wish you well.
