SMG Specialty Flooring

I’ll be in SMG next year and Warren is my number one choice for housing. I can’t decide whether I want to put down for specialty housing. I definitely want to meet people with diverse interests, but I also like the sense of convenience and community that SMG floors have.

Do you think it would be inconvenient if I didn’t choose specialty housing but still went up/down to the SMG floor to work on assignments and such? I feel like a lot of the potential roommates I’m meeting on facebook aren’t interested in SMG flooring, and I like the idea of choosing my roommate ahead of time.

I’ve been reading a lot about the benefits of SMG and would love to hear more, but I’m also wondering about whether I’d be disadvantaged by NOT choosing specialty.

Urgent! Thank you so much!

you wouldn’t be disadvantaged in anyway. the SMG floor is a tight knit floor the first year; it always is. but many of the people on the floor only meet peers from SMG. if you’re on another floor in warren, you’ll get to meet people from other schools and when you want to study with your SMG classmates, you will find a way. you’ll probably meet people from your classes who are living in warren too.

Thanks! Do you know if, on the housing survey, I can market interest in specialty flooring but also put a roommate down in case I’m not selected? Since there’s just one floor I feel like its very limited and I want a back up. I would make a note of this at the bottom of the survey.

maybe someone else can field this question. i don’t remember much about the housing survey. sorry!

I lived on the SMG floor in Warren last year (14th floor B tower), and I can tell you that no other floor was as close knit as ours. I would choose to go back a million times over for freshman year, you instantly have something in common with everyone on the floor and when given hard assignments everyone works on them in common room. Also, you’ll still meet plenty of people outside of SMG because you have to take CAS electives, so that shouldn’t be a concern.

As for filling out the housing application, you have 4 or 5 choices that you make in order of preference, but if you put a room mate down make sure they also put the management floor as their top pick, or else you probably won’t get in. You can always email someone at bu for specific questions like that.
