Hey guys, do you think I should select Warren specialty housing in an attempt to get the SMG floor? It seems really interesting to me, but it might not be as diverse since the students will all be in the same school, and I would probably see them in class anyway. Has anyone lived on the SMG floor and care to comment? I’m not sure if it would be beneficial or compromising for my experience. Or should I just not select specialty housing entirely?

PS, is there even a room deposit for BU? I know there is a $650 tuition deposit, but cannot seem to find a room deposit at all. Is this not required, as long as you fill out the housing survey? Is it so that the earlier you drop the deposit & fill out the survey, the better chance of getting your first choice? (Warren first choice, followed by towers). Any ideas of what I should put after those two? Thanks!

Well hello, as a matter of fact I happen to be the expert on SMG housing.

When I was in choosing dorms last year, I was like, ‘I don’t want the SMG floor, I don’t want to live with the same people that I have classes with’ etc.

Then the housing assignment got posted, and of course I get put on the management floor, so I’m all upset, thinking it’s gonna suck.

But then when I move in and classes start, I realize how awesome it all actually is. Having floormates who are taking the same classes as you are is the most convenient thing ever. We do homework together, we study together - and not just for the SMG class but also for economics, and some other classes. The RA on the SMG floor is always an SMG upperclassman, so they are also super helpful in all things regarding SMG (our RA held presentation review session for us, and other cool stuff). People on my floor are definitely closer friends than people on other floors. We have this incredible sense of SMG community going on here. Other SMG kids are always jealous of us. Seriously, it’s like having a second family here. And if you want diversity, we have like 14 different nationalities here this year.

As for the deposit, the $650 includes housing. Not really sure if it’s first come first serve, but I’d suggest paying it as soon as you can.

So yeah, don’t even think twice and apply for the management floor. I had the same feelings as you are having now, and my SMG floor experience has turned out to be the best thing ever.

Thanks Hanita, you pretty much answered all of my questions. I’m not 100% sure that I will apply for the specialty housing, but it did clear up most of my concerns. I mean, it seems rather interesting meeting other people in different schools/majors. I have a final question: During your freshman year, how well did you know people from other majors/colleges seeing as you lived on the SMG floor? I would love to get to know others, but is this more difficult being placed with people in the same classes as you? It seems that it would be more difficult getting to know others, so how did you first meet people from other majors? Thanks SMG expert :). Although, the convenience of living near people in your major seems excellent. I’m like 70% on SMG floor (assuming I even get it), so please convince me further lol.

Half of your Freshman classes are in CAS, where students from all different schools will be taking classess as well. So if I were u, I will not be afraid of not seeing people from other majors. Moreover, if u want to socialize, u will spend most of ur time in common room and places like that, not only stay in ur floor. It is nice to be in a specialized floor :)

Liridori, I did not even realize that, omg. Forgot all about the only having one class in SMG freshman year (Management as a System). I think it will be pretty cool being around SMG kids - living wise - since you’ll run into most of them in the future, which will be helpful since you’ll already know a bunch of em. If not, then at worst I won’t be placed into SMG housing and be another ordinary warren kid. Thanks guys; I will apply for specialty.

It’s not hard to meet people from other schools at all. My friends are about 50/50 SMG and non-SMG. I’ve met most of my non-SMG friends through my Community Service Center involvement (FYSOP etc.), joining clubs, and CAS classes. If you want to get a head start on making friends outside of your floor, then definitely do FYSOP - it’s awesomer than awesome. Your writing class will only have ~18 people in it, and I’ve found it really easy (and helpful) to make friends with them. Join clubs that are related to stuff you like, and you’ll meet even more people. Out of my 10 closest friends at BU, only 1 is in SMG.

SMG floor sort of gives you best of both worlds. It doesn’t limit your non-SMG social circles at all, but it dramatically expands your SMG social circles. You will have floormates in every SM121 discussion section, so virtually every SMG freshman is a ‘friend of a friend’ to you.

Let me know if you have any other SMG-related questions!
