What’s EE–at Wellesley?

I did not do an interview or apply to any other women’s colleges and yet I got a letter

EE at Wellesley refers to their Early Evaluation option that students can seek if they apply by the first of January. On February 23, Wellesley informed those applicants that they “likely” to be admitted, “unlikely” to be admitted, or that admission was “possible.” The working assumption everyone has is that the likelies will be admitted.

I didn’t apply to any other women’s colleges, and I did do an interview. I’m not sure how either of those factors contributed to my early acceptance, if at all.
By the way, my essay was about the first grade student I mentor and how he impacted my decision to start doing fundraisers and contributing to the world around me.

YAYAYAY I GOT THE LETTER :D

GPA: 3.91 UW
ACT: 34
Full IB Diploma Candidate + AP Calc AB
Lots of theatre, part time job, more theatre, editor for school magazine, more theatre, etc. No leadership or major awards.
Essays, recs, etc. were strong, as well as a great interview. I’m really really happy :)

Has Smith done this in the past? Does anyone know?

This seems to confirm the theory that Smith and Wellesley are in a “pitched battle” for the top applicants to both schools. There seems to be quite an overlap and the timing of these letters seems not to be coincidental.

All that said congrats to those who got the letters and likelys. What are you all going to do? I imagine financial aid will come into the picture.

I’m still waiting on 5 more schools, and yeah, financial aid does come in to the picture, very much so for me. I’m hoping that this early letter means I’m competitive for merit at Smith. I’m trying not to get too attached to any one school so that I’m not crushed when the decisions or money comes in.

But already with two damn good schools under my belt I’m going to have a very tough decision. I’m just so unbelievably grateful to have this tough decision to make   :)

kenzie-congratulations! Which other schools did you apply to? Which one have you been admitted to?

Yea I meant MARCH 25th. Anyways congrats to the amazing ladies that got in early!
The only other all girls college I applied to is Bryn Mawr.

Yeah, I think Smith is determined to grab as many students admitted to both Smith & Wellesley as possible. Funny thing, when they re-evaluated D’s financial aid package after she was admitted, they coincidentally beat both Wellesley’s and Barnard’s offers, both of which had been higher.

I guess enough time has passed that now it can be said: D was going to Smith no matter what at that juncture but it didn’t stop us from negotiating on the FinAid.

@upstatemom: I’ve been admitted to Wellesley, Smith, Bard, Lewis & Clark, and Oregon State. I’m still waiting on Brown, Vassar, Swarthmore, Barnard, and Whitman.

Just out of left field, is Brown your top choice?

I really like Brown, but I’m doing my best to try not to have a “top choice” until the acceptances come in - there’s no point in getting super attached to a dream school only to be crushed when the decisions or aid packages come in. I’ve seen that far too many times in the early decision round with my friends. I love all the schools on my list and know that I would thrive at all of them.

I’ll tell you my top choice come May 1 ;)

Interesting grouping. I’m guessing that Oregon State and Lewis & Clark are your safeties. Fwiw, imho, Bard is the school most unlike Wellesley. Whitman is one of those schools that would have US News rankings a lot higher if it were on the East Coast, an indicator of how many tons of salt one needs to take those rankings with. (I’d still choose Smith if it were me but Whitman “fits” with your list.)

D looked at Brown hard, didn’t apply because the ballet offered was via Providence Festival Ballet and she didn’t like what she saw on their website.

Yeah at this point Bard, L&C, and OSU are kind of obsolete unless I end up pulling in some big merit money (and not enough at the other schools).

My interesting grouping comes from my desire to double major or major/minor in chemistry and theatre. I started off my list a lot more focused on theatre and then the science thing came in later and that’s what I ended up with. I’m convinced they would all be good fits for various reasons for each school. I don’t have a particular set of criteria. I visited Smith, Wellesley, and Brown (and a few others that didn’t make their way on to my list) in October, and Whitman and L&C last spring, but I haven’t had a chance to see Vassar, Swarthmore, Barnard, and Bard yet.

I got a letter tonight! Totally out of the blue. I can’t believe it, still. The note said she was “just like me” - I wrote my essay about how I follow the speed limit.
Stats: 34 ACT, state honors choir, tons of choir activities, volunteering, 4 years of (failtastic JV) tennis, 3.97 UW GPA, 6 APs. No interview, no other women’s colleges. Not really that unique. Then again, my identical twin is a Nat’l Merit Finalist (but otherwise our stats are pretty equal). Maybe that played a part?
Seriously, I wasn’t sure I’d get in. Everyone else is so… accomplished and awesome! Congratulations to everyone!

This letter thing is very interesting, as I am pretty sure that it is new this year. I agree with others, this is likely a response to Wellesley’s practice of EE and likely letters. Congrats to those that got them! I hope the financial aid continues to support your attendance. To those that didn’t, don’t lose heart.

I didn’t get a letter, but that’s so cool that the Smith admissions office responded to everyone’s admission essays. 'Grats you guys. : )

What great news so many of you have! Congratulations! Yeah, these early acceptances look like a direct competition to Wellesley and equivalent schools. For those who haven’t heard yet, don’t give up hope! And I’m rooting for attractive financial aid/merit aid!

congrats, everyone!
that is so exciting! i can’t wait to see at least some of you around campus next year
