If I get a 1 or 2 on 2 AP exams before applying, does that hurt me badly for admissions?

You can always choose not to provide the AP score to the colleges. And it depends on what your high school does with such scores – whether they are on your transcript or not, and whether they include them on the transcript they provide to colleges or not.

All this said, if your schedule is viewed as most rigorous by your school based on AP classes taken, and if your GPA is weighed by AP classes, not reporting scores can be viewed as “odd”. And, in any case, getting 1 or 2s on AP exams is a red flag to you that you didn’t absorb the material.

Yeah, it is, and I’m trying to find out if I can retake the exams next year, but as of now, I’m worried that the poor performance I had on these exams could hinder my chances for admission. Also, my school doesn’t put the scores on my transcript, and I do well enough in the classes to be in the top 10%.

If your class is designated “AP” you should report the score. You still have time to study, or retake in the fall.

AP exams are only offered in May each year.

^My GC said make-up exams are offered in the fall for those who receive a 1. Of course, being from a shoddy public school, she could be grossly misinformed.

Even if I report a bad score, will it seriously hurt me in the admissions process? And if I don’t, will it really matter a significant amount? Also, I think they’re only offered in May.

A good rule of thumb is to refrain from reporting 1’s and 2’s. Any non-passing AP score is not one you want colleges to see. But I reiterate fogcity’s caution.

I wouldn’t think so, as long as you have a nice array of other scores that outweigh your missteps.

That would be a yes. There’s nothing like that.

“I wouldn’t think so, as long as you have a nice array of other scores that outweigh your missteps.”

Do you mean a decent gpa, sat, etc?

Yes, along with other AP scores that are in the 4-5 range.
