I had a meeting with my advisor the week before Spring Break and she's not too optimistic about be gaining standard admission to Kelley. However, I'm a direct admit to CAS and therefore my advisor is geared toward CAS and isn't that familiar with Kelley. She said I have two "deficiencies" (B-'s) that put me below the rest, but I still have the 3.0.

Last semester, I got these grades:

MATH-M118: B-

MATH-M119: B

BUS-A100: A+

BUS-K201: A- (I had a D at midterm and my advisor knew of this somehow, so I'm not sure if that carries through...)

ECON-E201: B-

TEL-T206: A

This semester, I'm enrolled in ECON-E202, BUS-X104, BUS-G202, HISP-S250, CJUS-P100 and MATH-M212. I'm maintaining a constant B average, but getting a C- in M212 and unfortunately I can't drop. I'm exempted from W131 due to my ACT English score.

In addition to that, I'm active in B-Town United and I work part time as an equipment manager at the HPER.

I'm worried about these two B-'s and MATH-M212. As M212 isn't a requirement for Kelley admission, will they be more leniant if I end up with a C or.. gulp a D? The class is not getting any easier.

So I guess since I'm not an auto-admit, this is just a chances thread. Any input appreciated.

I know Kelley offered a probationary period (I’m not sure if this is the right name, it may be officially called something else) to my friend who recieved all A’s and B’s and one B minus. I’m not sure if they would do this with two A minuses, but I don’t see why not. He had one semester to get all A’s and B’s, and he ended up with another B minus, so he was not admitted. I’d say that would be your best shot at this point. However, Kelley will not admit you with a C or D in any class, whether or not it was in a Kelley prereq. I doubt they would give you probation. Why can’t you drop it? Its not past time to get an automatic W. If you want to get into Kelley, Id say thats your best bet.

It is so competitive now to get into Kelley, mostly because direct admits take up so many slots. Data from Kelley appearing in Businessweek for 2005-06 and 2010-11 is very revealing.

2005-06
Direct Admits 332
Regular Admits 955
Total 1287

2010-11
Direct Admits 829
Regular Admits 553
Total 1382

Kelley added one hundreds slots 2010/11 over 2005/06, but they also had 500 more direct admits. In 2005/06, 78% of the internal applicants (in other words, freshmen and sophomores applying) were accepted. The percentage of internal applicants who got in 2010/11 was not decipherable from the Businessweek stats, but it is no doubt way less than fifty percent, someone who worked in Kelley said that less than fifty percent got accepted a few years ago, and the number getting in probably goes down every year.

So when they say you have to get solid B’s across all coursework, you probably do have to get solid B’s across all coursework. In terms of scheduling, just do the minimum, get all B’s and higher, and they have to let you in. Don’t push your luck by taking extra hard math classes and don’t take both finite and calculus in your freshman year-- only one of these classes is required (both are difficult, but calculus is by far the least “quirky” of the two, so I recommend taking M119-- do not take M211 or M212 if you test into them at orientation, no matter what your adviser tells you to do. Kelley will not be impressed if you take both finite and calculus; just take one and get at least a solid B in it and in every other class you take. Use the grade distribution and take the easiest grading classes you can find. Also, Fall semester take CSCI A110 (Introduction to Computers and Computing), then Spring semester apply what you learn in that class (A110 and K201 have very similar content) to K201, which will make it much less difficult to get the solid B in K201. A110 will also help with the distribution option, because it is an easy N&M course.

Thanks bthomp, I had no idea there were so many DA’s compared to Standard Admits. That’s definitely not what I like to hear.

I understand that my grades in E201 and M118 pose potential risk, but I’m far more concerned about my pending M212 grade because I swear, the class gets harder and harder every week and I’m literally hanging on for dear life. It’s to the point where I just sit in class and don’t pay attention because I’ll truly get nothing less out of it. I only have a C- because I did fine with the review of Calc I concepts at the beginning, but as soon as we started new stuff I’ve failed ** everything ** and I was stupid and didn’t get out while I still could.

I tested into M212 at orientation, but I didn’t wanna take it so my advisor reccomended M119 and told me that if I get a B or better that I need to take M212 for “easy N&M credit” as it’s “about the same difficulty as M119” which is such a lie but I still took her word for it.

** So, I guess, worst case scenario:** I wait to submit my app to Kelley and end up receiving an F in M212. It’s gonna happen i’m pretty sure. I utilize the Extended-X policy and retake M212 in the Fall and actually do well in it (I don’t know how, but I’ll find a way), and get say a B. Then apply to Kelley after Fall semester. Would this plan work?

I’m in an even worse situation than you and I’m even more worried…

Last semester grades: 3.3 GPA

A110 A+
X100 B+
K201 W
F101 A-
M119 C

Current second semester grades: ?

T206 A-
K201 A
P150 B+
W131 C
A100 ? (Taking now, second 8-weeks)
C121 B+

Extremely ****ed off and annoyed with W131. I took AP/honors lit all throughout high school and this teacher’s grading is incredibly unfair and she blatantly plays favorites.

Are my chances virtually gone? (I can still finish with all A’s and B’s this semester…with W131 the lowest at a B-)

^ T206 with Prof. Steven Krahnke was, by far, the most boss class I’ve ever taken. He was an awesome professor and lecture was super interesting and the material in the class was interesting and because of this class I might make TEL my major if I don’t get into Kelley.

With other professors though (if there are any), it’s probably good too. But if you can get it w/ Krahnke you’ve got yourself an easy B and a truly interesting class.

So now that grades are in for the spring semester…

ECON-E202: A-

BUS-X104: A

BUS-G202: B

HISP-S250: B+

CJUS-P100: B

MATH-M212: D-

… is there any, ** any **, ANY, ** ANY ** possibe way to still make it into Kelley? My parents are absolutely furious and I’m totally lost as far as what I’ll do if I can’t get into the business school… I 100% literally broke down and cried when I saw my grade on the M212 final and I feel like my life is going down the drain because of that one stupid class. I’ve never studied so hard for an exam in my life and I just really let myself down.

I know some programs will look at first summer session grades and take that into account before making a decision, but am unsure if the business school is one. I would email/call bschool@indiana.edu or 812-855-4474 to check. If they don’t, I would ask somebody to hold off on their decision for a week or two so your new grade(s) can be taken into account.

well according to the website you already have 3 defecations on your application as you have 2 B-'s and 1 D but thats just looking at it from a structured point of view…
is there anyone that can talk to me on skype or something about my scheduling? I have a set schedule already but I need someone to help me confirm before I enroll.

u will not get into Kelley u got a D. Im gonna get in cuz i only have a C+ other then that I did pretty well u see u need to lern to balance the partying and studying obviously u cant handle both.

since u r still in bloomington i suggest u contact an advisor n tell then what ur situation is because maybe they will make an acception but i highly doubt it. but u hve no one to blame but urself u shouldve thot about this when u were always at the frats or parties ut grdes r gonna suffer the more u party thats why i dont party

loon lake, my suggestion would be to just retake everything in which you got a B- or lower and try to get at least a B or even better yet, an A. Just take everything in the summer. You can forget about anything else, if you really wanna be in Kelley, you definitely have to sacrifice some

Sorry to hear about the grades. If there is anything you have done wrong, it is the M212 which is not meant for most of Kelley students. Since you did well on A100, I think that you have the aptitude as a Business students. You also have contributed a lot on this forum with thoughtful comments. I have no doubt that you will be successful. Would you be able to get into Economics? Would you be able to get into LAMP? Don’t give up.

Holy wow, thanks everyone for the prompt replies.

You see, this was my plan. However I was told that you can’t use the Extended X-policy for Kelley admissions and that your first grade carries over; so in some respects I feel like I’m wasting my time retaking M212 since it won’t help anything other than my overall GPA which is still fairly okay (3.25).

This was/is my plan. Firstly, since you can only apply to Kelley once, I need to cancel my application before I get rejected if that’s somehow possible. I’ll call them up on that tomorrow. I’m currently in M212, E370, and Intensive Writing (I forget the course number). If I were to stay in Bloomington for the second summer session (which is tough since I haven’t been home since winter break and I pre-paid rent to stay with my friend in his apt…) and I took M118 and E201 again, and nothing else and focused really hard to get an A in both of them and then re-applied to the Business school in August, would they consider my NEW grades in those classes even though I didn’t utilize the extended X policy? Or would I just look stupid and would my retaking the two classes be a waste of my money? And I feel like I wouldn’t be able to concentrate fully on E201 and M118 because I’m working 30 hrs/wk off campus just so I can pay rent to take the ** first summer session (let alone the second) ** classes so a ton of my time is taken up doing that and that’s less time I could spend studying. I also have to workand make enough money just to come back to IU next year too and well I’m surely not doing that either so this is quite the decision because with school too I don’t have time for that. But if I can’t get enough money to give my parents by the end of the summer to come back to IU in August, well there’s no point in worrying about Kelley, is there?

Well I’m just talking in circles. Different scenarios of how this crap can/will play out are going through my head all day every day. I don’t evenhave an advisor in the business schooland the one I do have is completely unrealistic and way too optimistic. Can I go talk to someone at KSOB about this? Wil they even be around? Because no one’s around…

Loonlake, if you are still trying to get into Kelley, why are you taking an intensive writing course. Kelley does not require an intensive writing class. Did you tested out of the W131 requirement with ACT/SAT scores? Seems like you mentioned once that you did.

You need to talk to an advisor at Kelley. From the website:

"Non-Business Student Advising (including University Division)

We do not accept appointments or walk-in meetings from non-business students beginning the Monday of the week before course enrollment opens each semester and continuing for four school weeks after (spring break does not count). We are happy to meet with University Division and other students before and after that time each semester. Please remember that if non-business students, or staff helping them, need help from us during the two months that we see only admitted students, we are accessible via e-mail or by telephone."

Yes, please contact an advisor ASAP. They may tell you you are wasting your time and money. Try calling the number Illinoismom gave you. Kelley used to have on-call telephone advisors; hopefully they will have some this week. I think you can still get a 100% fee refund if you drop by May 16 at midnight.
