I attend a community college in California and I’m hoping to apply to the UC’s this November. By the end of this fall, I should have most of my pre-reqs done. By the spring semester (2017) , I should be IGETC certified and all my pre-reqs will be complete. But, I’m in a dilemma. This spring semester, I screwed up on 2 classes cause my sister got mentally ill and that really messed with my mind set this semester. But I was still able to get all A’s in my other classes, but I have to repeat those two classes that I messed up on. I got a D in Critical Thinking and I failed my Spanish 2 class. But, I’m taking the Spanish 2 class over the summer. So by novemeber when I apply, I’ll have a cum. GPA of 3.84. I’m going to repeat the English class in the fall so my cum GPA jumps back to a 4.0 by the end of the fall semester. I really wanted to apply as a biz econ major at UCLA, but is that plausible anymore? Should I apply as a Econ major instead? I also wanted to apply to haas (UCB). But with my situation, would that be a smart move? Should I just apply as an Econ major there too? I really want to get into one of these two schools by next year, but I don’t know what major I should pick. I’m assuming haas and biz econ are a lot harder to get into compared to getting in as an econ major. Am I wrong in assuming that or…? I just don’t want to be stuck at community college next year. Also, which cum. GPA would they base admission off of? The one submitted before the fall grades or the one after? I’m hoping for the one after cause my Cum GPA would go back to a 4.0. And how would LA and Berkeley view me repeating 2 classes? Any info would be appreciated
Those are incredibly competitive programs to apply to, to be sure, but your record speaks to your abilities quite well and if you were to retake these classes for an A grade, I would think it’s definitely worth applying. You don’t want to sit and wonder what if by not applying for those majors and you’ll have a chance to explain the grades in your application anyways. Everyone encounters difficult situations in life and in school and you showing them how you can recover from such a situation is very valuable to an admissions committee. Your GPA at the end of next Fall is what will really matter, most likely.
Hmm I see. So should I apply as a business major or as an Econ major because I’ll have the pre-reqs for both completed. I just want to get into one of those schools, preferably for business. But if my chances for business is low, I wouldn’t mind applying as an Econ major.
@Wannabeibanker it seems like a tough question then, if you wouldn’t mind applying as an econ major as well. I feel pretty ill-equipped to offer you much advice tbh, I hope you can get in touch with some of the business major transfers around here then and get their opinion. More valuable still, a UCLA transfer advisor. They often visit CCs, check around your area.

Econ has only a slightly higher admission rate than biz-econ, but the stats for both are pretty similar. They probably won’t even look at your application until you update it with your Fall grades anyways, so assuming you can make these up and keep up a 4.0 I would regar your chances fairly well.
As a side note, do you have ECs? If not, or if they’re not as good as you’d like, I’d seriously consider doing plenty in the next year/this summer. I hear they’re of great importance for your intended major. Good luck!
