since ive asked so many questions, i thought id give back :)

here's for all you fellow incoming first year students

i had the very first orientation session on june 23 and 24. here's what you need to know imho

*bring a mouse. everyone who used one and got all their classes; all the people in my group who couldnt get one or more of the classes they were considering were using touchpads of the laptops they gave us.
*if you are in engineering, do the engineering tour. it's kinda boring, you learn a lot about your major and the college's (seperate) academic policies. some of the info, you wont get elsewhere.
*if youre an engineer, you are GUARANTEED the classes specifically mentioned on your major sheet. sign up for your GE electives first. you can sign up for up for 21 credits cause youre already in your second pass.
*a few freshman intro courses weren't on the courses of the day list (the list of classes that they keep spots open for orientation).
*make sure to thank your orientation staffer. they were pretty tried after their first day, and i was in the very first session.

just to get this of the way...i dont want to post the courses of the day list. it's pretty long and it's unfair for people who dont see this.

I would also like to contribute!! I went to the orientation yesterday. :]
I’m an Engineering student as well and I agree with everything OP said. Here are some extra tips:

Bring really good walking shoes because you will be walking a LOT. I have so many blisters…

General eds fill up REALLY quickly. Before you get to orientation, check ratemyprofessors.com and research the different professors on the GOLD website. You do not want to be checking professors during the registration craze.

If you need to take a writing class, sign up for that FIRST. There were only 2 spaces and the professor and time I wanted was taken by the time I was able to be signed on. Research the writing professors and try to create multiple schedules. Check to see that the Finals + labs (if any) overlap while you are creating your schedule. Do this before you arrive at Orientation.

There are some really popular GEs such as Psy 1. I was able to snag this class after registering for Writ 2.

Not all of the events are required. I wish I had skipped the Student Life workshop. It was a waste of time.

Waking up at 8am is worth it if a good professor with high ratings is teaching the course. Don’t pick a worse professor just to get the afternoon class. I did this once and I still regret it.

If you decide to go to the presentation before the student night out and you decide to volunteer, try to go last… :] (report back results, I’m curious)

If you are nervous about making friends…don’t be! Everyone is in your position and everyone will be as nervous as you are about orientation! All the friends I made were in my advising group so don’t worry if you don’t hit it off right away during the morning tours.

Try to get your student ID during the UCen tour if you go while everyone is in The Hub. The lines will be LONG if you go at the same time as everyone else and you might not be able to receive it and will have to find time later in the day to take it.

The line for printing out the schedule of your classes was REALLY long and people were standing in it for at least an hour. If you are an Engineering student, you can skip this line and go directly upstairs (they will tell you where to go). If you are not an Engineering student, try to roll out as SOON as possible so that you do not have to wait in the really long line.

Don’t forget to turn in your key to your room when you check out!! It’s sixty dollars if you don’t turn it in before 6pm.

seriously, the non engineering line had like 200 kids and extended down the stairs and out the front exit and from there it stretched across the quad

the engineering line had 5 kids in it :O

i actually felt pretty bad getting in that line haha

he is not kidding you. people literally left the big line cause they would be late to turn in their room keys (turn in time was 6!)

I’m not sure about the men’s bathrooms but…oh wait they’re coed.

The bathrooms in Miranda, the building I was in, just had one stall and one shower in them. There’s a curtain but you can lock the door and be the only person there. I don’t know anyone who took a shower though.

The bathrooms were kinda annoying though because there wasn’t a separate switch for the light and the fan so you had to deal with the obnoxious fan whenever you wanted light…plus it had a window that you couldn’t cover. :|

haku, or any other engineering student who went to orientation yesterday,
can you tell me what your schedule is because I wasn’t aware we could sign up for any other GE’s other than writing our first quarter as an engineer. (I’m chemical so that might change things)

I’m going to orientation next week and am REALLY nervous about signing up for classes.
I’m a Computer engineering major and I heard that it’s important to sign up for your chem classes/labs first because those are the hardest to get into. Wouldn’t it be easier to sign up for ge’s after that considering we’re guaranteed spots?

Waffles- You aren’t guaranteed GEs but you are guaranteed classes like math and CompSci. No one is guaranteed GE courses–it’s first come first serve.

By the way, I’m an honors student and I didn’t have priority registration for the first quarter just in case anyone is wondering about that. My pass time was said to be a full day earlier than anyone else’s, but I wasn’t able to register until everyone else could.

Confused- I placed into 3B because of college credits. I brought my unofficial transcript just in case but I didn’t seem to need it. If you are in Engineering, you cannot register for courses such as Math 3B until you go into a separate room and speak to a man about your pre-requisites. He didn’t even check my transcript.
