Someone help me understand.

So I am interested in applying to UF and I want at least a 3.75 GPA or 3.7. Freshman year I had a 3.5 GPA and sophomore year I had a 3.6 then junior year I had a 3.7. If I take alot of honors classes and get all A’s is it possible to bring my GPA average? I know they say you can’t really change your gpa much during senior year but is it still possible. Also do you think UF would accept someone with a 3.6 GPA with a ok ACT score?

Keeping in mind that UF uses holistic admissions, and considers factors other than GPA and test scores…

UF will be looking at your weighted GPA and it will only use your classes from 9th to 11th grade, plus any college prep classes taken in your 7th and 8th grade years (these will show up on your HS transcripts, you may want to ask for a copy). The more honor and AP (IB/AICE/Duel Enrollment) classes you take in your 9th thru 11th grade, the better as it will raise your weighted GPA. UF wants a high GPA and a rigorous course load.

They will check your 12th grade classes, to insure you’re taking a rigorous set of classes, but they will not consider them in your GPA calculation.

A 3.6 GPA seems a bit low for UF, so it may be a reach. However, other factors, like weighting the classes, how rigorous is your high school, your class ranking at that high school, etc, all come into play.

UF does accept students with GPA’s in this range, just not that many as compared to the overall class.

Good Luck!

For admissions purposes your junior year GPA is more important than your senior year. Your initial application will be this fall and have three years of grades, and first term senior year grades are added later. Second term senior grades aren’t available until after admissions decisions are done and are only glanced at to make sure you didn’t slack off too much after acceptance.

If a 3.75 is recommended for UF, you need to find some backup schools.

This doesn’t really answer your question, but UF has its own way of calculating GPA - probably won’t be the same as yours. They don’t even accept transcripts unless you’ve been accepted, the way I understand it - you self-report grades using their formula.

e.g.:
+1 for AP/Dual enrollment/AICE/IB classes
+.5 for honors classes
There is no extra for + (UF doesn’t count + or - )
Also, non-academic classes like PE are not counted at all.

So an A in AP Calculus would be a 5.0. A B in Geometry honors would be a 3.5 . Assign the points to all your classes and add them up. Divide that number by the number of classes (remember not to include points for underwater basketweaving, driver’s ed, health, PE, band, etc., and also don’t include those classes in your total number of classes) and you’ll get your UF GPA

UF is going to be something of a reach, so you do want to apply to several other schools, including a few safeties.

UF doesn’t consider your 12th year first term grades in admissions. They don’t ask for your HS transcript, until you’ve been accepted and enrolled into the school (in the summer after 12th grade, no midyear grade updates are required). The only thing your 12th year grades can do, is get your offered rescinded if you do poorly.

You do submit your grades, with your college application, in the fall. UF uses a student self-reported academic record (SSAR) and not the HS transcript. If you’re found to have filled out your SSAR inaccurately, your offer can also be rescinded, make sure you use your HS transcript when you fill out the SSAR (FSU also requires a SSAR).

My son updated his SSAR transcript online after first semester senior year. And his school sends a final transcript to UF. Is it necessary to update the online SSAR with the final semester’s grades?

@Trisherella No need, since the school has to send the final transcripts. The final grades are not used in admissions (duh, you’re already in!), but they could possibly rescind your admissions, if the final transcript doesn’t match the SSAR or if you had poor grades your senior year. They also use the final transcripts to ensure you’ve met the requirements for admissions.

I’m not clear as to whether the 3.6 is the hs weighted, UF weighted, or unweighted GPA.

Because a 3.6 weighted wouldn’t be sufficient.

@MYOS1634 What Gator88NE is saying is an UW 3.6 will probably not be enough unless the applicant has a lot of AP/DE/IB/AICE weighed courses. Since the OP is looking to add honors classes, that is probably not the case. The average admitted student for Fall 2017 had a UF weighted GPA of 4.45, that takes a lot of AP/DE classes if UW is 3.6.

While UF uses holistic admission, HS performance is heavily weighted. The OP will need to bring something else compelling to their application to be competitive.

^ i know  but while 4+ weighted is a minimum, 3.6 un weighted might be close enough for UF to be within reach, whereas a 3.6 weighted makes UF impossible. Op isn’t clear about what GPA they are talking about.

Just to update i realized that UF has it’s own way of calculating my GPA. Also my GPA last year was a 3.7 unweighted but I had one honors class that I got a 89 in so does that mean the weighted gpa is 3.75?
