It sounds like my son is in the same EA boat as several other here. He received the “we’re still working on it, you’ll have a decision in February” message too, which had him wondering if it was a deferral or a true “we haven’t had time” thing. The wait has reduced his interest and ability to visit, as we could only afford to make a visit if he was accepted. New admission strategies have marketing consequences.
We haven’t received anything
@Mschloington I think it’s odd that you don’t have a decision yet. DS applied 10/31 with the golden admission application, but Mines didn’t receive his transcript until a couple of weeks weeks later. He got the mid-February email, but was admitted on Jan 17th. DD applied in late November and also was admitted on Jan. 17th.
@MetsFanNYC Hang in there! Mines is an amazing school, but I fear the admissions process is chronically understaffed from what I’ve heard. Based on what we read about how backed up they can get, my DS applied when the app opened up. Fingers crossed you hear something v soon!
@Creaky Are you sure the application was submitted 10/31? Mine applied before that and transcripts, etc was all in before 11/1. Admissions said they are going in date order, but that does not look like the case.
@MetsFanNYC I’m sure. I remember his stress that he wasn’t going to be able to hit "submit’ before midnight on the 31st. Also, not to stress your family more, but my DD applied in late November and was also accepted to Mines on Jan. 17. (She was admitted ED to another school, so won’t be attending Mines.)
Daughter was accepted before Thanksgiving-- applied before Nov 1. I guess we’re lucky! Last year son did not get acceptance til early December-- well over the 30 days they had promised at the time. Admissions is nothing if not frustrating. This was our number one school. Fell in love on a visit, but really can’t work with admissions at all to help with the decision. They have admitted students days–last year it was no different from the regular session where they talked about how to apply, what’s considered in acceptances, etc. We wanted to make sure this year if paying for a flight that the time would not be wasted, but we can’t even get an agenda for different days. The connect session is half day but they don’t know what they will be doing except meeting other women.
When we asked to stay in a dorm – daughter is 17 and can’t get a hotel room and would like to experience the dorm like at other schools–they said they don’t do that.
It seems they spam students with emails prior to application and then once accepted, it’s like pulling teeth to get any assistance with the decision. I can only hope it’s because they are short staffed and working so hard on reviewing applications. We’ve heard it’s great, but what if you don’t get the classes you need? Is the registrar as short staffed? Is there support for the professors administratively? What if your bill or grades are messed up? It’s hard to commit to a school with so many red flags.
Got an email that transcript was sent to Mines – one had been submitted on 24 Oct, so I’m wondering if they ask for updated transcripts? That would be good b/c his grades have been excellent; still trying to figure out if Mines is worth the $$
@metsfannyc My son is still waiting too. Application complete with transcripts, etc. 10/22. Maybe they aren’t good at the “date order” thing. Last email from admissions said they hoped to have early applicants complete by end of January. That didn’t happen. Now just hoping for something at all before the 3/1 Honors date - though the priority for that has passed already. My son is frustrated and now I’m starting to be concerned about what his student experience will be like. Son did not submit upgraded grades, though they were still excellent.
Notified tonight! Accepted w $9000/year. Relieved!!
applied Jan 8, just notified I was admitted to ChemE today!! 9k annual merit scholarship, OOS. Still pretty expensive… is it worth it?
Finally got notified of his acceptance tonight! Nice $14k annual merit too!
Daughter was accepted today with $14,000 scholarship. Environmental Engineering. OOS Texas. ACT 33.
Son accepted last night!
Applied late Oct with transcripts confirmed on 11/1/18, Golden application and he did supplemental essay
In-State
1350 SAT
3.96 unweighted GPA
3rd in class (very small school, top 5%)
He took as many AP classes and as many extra science that his small school provides. Varsity X-Country, Ski, and Track teams all 4 years with other club involvements as well. It’s his #1 choice, so I’m 99% sure he’ll accept right away.
@txmomx4 Hang in there.
We went to the portal yesterday and saw the acceptance. Now the stress of knowing about that is gone, to be replaced with the stress of paying OOS tuition! (Did get the $12k Merit award, so that definitely helps). Looks like they did a bunch of decisions yesterday (7th). We were expecting an email notice, but saw all the activity on here yesterday, so I had my child log in and saw the portal notice.
Son finally accepted yesterday OOS electrical engineering, with $14K merit award. Still waiting on some other schools that have later acceptance dates. Accepted also OOS GA Tech and in-state UT-Austin for electrical engineering. That was a long wait from application 10/22…
As a parent and OOS, It is still very expensive even with the $9,000 scholarship, It is almost 48K (Down from 57K) per year.
@lkbxxxx Same here, I don’t think I’ll be able to attend because of high cost
My son won’t be attending Mines. It was by far his first choice, but it’s still way, way, WAY too expensive for us. Even with $12K award, impossible to swing the cost.
Interesting that so many think they will get a great FA/merit award from Mines. It is a public school and very few public schools give anything in the way of merit or FA. The merit they do give is extremely competitive. If you can’t afford the 50K+ for OOS its probably going to end up as a school you cant afford.
