Sophmore Scholarships?

My daughter is currently a HS senior and is considering applying to UA. Her stats (3.9 UW GPA & 2000 SAT) are good enough for a scholarship, but she has missed the deadline to apply. If she applies now and goes to UA without a scholarship, is it possible to apply (and have a reasonable chance to be approved) after her freshman year? Thanks.

Dec 1 is the “priority date” for scholarships, that doesn’t mean that they won’t award scholarships to those who apply afterwards. The Dec 1st date is just a “guaranteed date.” UA is known to award scholarships to incoming freshmen students who apply after Dec 1st. Since it is close to Dec 1st, I think her chances for an award for next year are good.

She should apply now, get her follow-on email, then apply for scholarships as soon as she can.

Sophomore scholarships aren’t very big…that’s why it’s best to apply now in hopes of still getting an incoming freshmen one.

May I ask what state you’re from? I don’t know if it makes a difference, but UA may be more likely to be generous if you’re from a state that UA doesn’t have a lot of students.

BTW…what will her likely major be? What is her SAT breakdown?

mom2collegekids: Thanks for the info. We’ll apply tonight and see what happens.

Her Stats:
1330 SAT M/CR
3.9 UW GPA
Pennsylvania
Nursing

Any opinions?

I think they will give her a scholarship. She may not learn about it right away. She may not get it until Feb/Mar. I know someone that wasn’t given his scholarship until Feb last year because he missed the deadline.

She’s a desirable applicant. Her stats are very good. She’s from a state where UA doesn’t have too many students.

Nursing is also a desirable major. UA is building a brand new nursing building.

She should apply to the school ASAP (apply today if you can - school closes on Friday). The follow-up email will come a couple of days later. Then she’ll apply for scholarships. Then, after acceptance, she can apply to the honors college - she’ll be accepted based on her stats. :)

Thanks again. The application will be submitted tonight, how quickly we can get the school to send her transcripts is another matter. Hopefully within two weeks. The SAT scores go fairly quickly.

If she applies today, she should have her email by Tuesday (be on the lookout for that). As soon as that comes, use the info to create the MyBama account. Log in and do the scholarships page - it’s not a hard app at all.

Has UA been known to give higher scholarships than advertised? My ACT is only a 28, but I’m OOS with a high GPA.

Sometimes UA gives some stacked scholarships.

Refresh my memory…what did you put down as your major?

Political Science

Hi…sorry I missed your earlier post.

Alabama awards scholarships at the University, College, and Department level.

The ones you see on the scholarship page are the University level schollies.

Poly Sci is in the College of Arts and Sciences. A&S also awards scholarships. I don’t know if the Poly Sci dept awards scholarships. But, since A&S awards scholarships, you have a chance for more money. :)

BTW…I don’t know if you’re interested in law school, but I was glad to see how well ranked UA’s law school is by USNews… I’ve always heard that the law school was good, but I didn’t know how it was ranked.
