Currently my unweighted GPA from my first 3 semesters is 80.18 (out of 100)
I live in rural Vermont. I'm active in student government, Vermont Teen Leadership Safety Program (drug prevention and safety group), I have participated in a school trip to Southeast Asia, I am currently playing Varsity Ultimate Frisbee and will be for the next 2 years, as well as soccer for the next 2 years in the fall. I'm in all Accelerated classes except for mathematics classes. Neither of my parents graduated college. I also participate in Art Club and have a growing interest in Art and Art history. I am currently getting an average of about 84 for my classes this semester.

I'm not sure of what I would like to major in. I'm currently looking at colleges (nothing too serious yet) but after spending alot of time in Massachusetts I've come to love Amherst. This is, quite literally, my dream college.

Do I stand a chance? I'm CLEARLY not in the right academic zone, but if I get into gear and shape up am I capable of being able to attend? My goal for the next 2 years is solid 90's across the board with many academic electives.

Again, I know I'm not currently in a good standing ground to be asking this question, but I need honest opinions about whether or not if I improve if I can be accepted to this college.

I think an 80 maps to a 2.5 GPA. That is definitely on the low end of the spectrum but if your courses are notably challenging, that might help… that being said, you’ll want to take the SAT or ACT and do well on them. Get the GPA up to a 3.2 which is possible if you get straight As from this point out.

Your interests and ECs are interesting already. You just need to work on the objective metrics (GPA, SAT).

Yea, I’m hoping/planning on a 3.2 GPA by my senior year. Can anybody tell me the actual chances I will have with this? And what should I aim for on the SAT?

3.2 weighted or unweighted? Based on the last few years, you would like need to get it to a 3.2 unweighted . That could change depending on the year, however. GPA seems to be the most important item to UMass admissions. Your SATs could be through the roof, your ECs varied and impressive, but if your unweighted GPA does not reach their cutoff that year, unless you are a recruited varsity athlete, you are out of luck. It seems most times they look at GPA first, and if it does not meet the cutoff, they look no further.

Call UMass admissions, and they will tell you what the minimum GPA they looked for this year was. They are very helpful and willing to explain to you what they look for.

I would wait until after May 1 to call…they should be less busy then.
Good Luck!

I would aim for 1200 on your V and M SATS. I think a bit lower is fine, but with a 3.2 GPA and 1160-1200 SATS, based on the last 3 years stats, you should be OK.
