South Carolina Honors College Acceptance

Go and read the waiver. It has nothing to do with what the LOR writer does. It only limits your ability to ask the college to see it.

The second round acceptance letters will go out via regular mail on or about Feb. 15. There are some students that have been put into deferred status already for the HC and they will also be notified at the same time. I do not think that being in HC as an OOS gets you a in-state tuition adjustment. The money offer in the first acceptance letter is most likely part of the in-state reduction UNLESS is said “merit” on it. IF a student has already qualified for “merit based scholarship” it will just that but NO dollar amount will be listed. All students with merit based scholarships will be notified in March as to what they will receive.

I am wondering if a “under further review” status for HC is better than not hearing anything at all in the first wave?

The waiver I was referring to was one that the high school asks for. I wasn’t aware (I’m the mom, I type in the credit card number (and proofread the essays)) there was one on the College app site although that makes sense.

Thanks for all the insight everyone.

Nicole

They tell you that awards will be made mid March, but the final merit aid (not financial aid such as loan eligibility) may come earlier. Last year, my son received his final merit aid award in mid/late February. Capstone came first week of March. Many of the Capstone kids receive the same merit aid as the HC kids, Final financial aid packages (merit plus loan info) came in mid March as promised.
With respect to kids self assessment of the quality of the LOR, I would not put much weight into what you read here. Even if they review the LOR, the only folks qualified to to assess the value of the LORs are the Admissions counselors who rely on them. I suspect that may vary from school to school.
-For those waiting on HC acceptance, I was looking over my younger son’s dashboard this week and noted that SC is one of the schools for which there is no option to “decline” admission. Thus, if an applicant who is offered admittance to USC, and then HC, the university doesn’t know if they decline until after the acceptance deadline (May 1) has passed. What this means is that the Univ. is not waiting for a decline to offer another spot, but rather is working on a broader “yield” principal. More offers will need to go out to obtain the expected yield.

When the next wave of acceptances go out mid-month, will students be notified if they have not been accepted?

I’d like to know the same thing! I feel like I’ve seen somewhere on here that you will NOT hear if you don’t get in, but I can’t be certain.

Did anyone attend the HC briefing last Friday? I’m curious what type of information was provided.

It wasn’t a briefing, it was a social hour. Literally just a chance to mingle with some professors and current students.

I answered this question on the other thread. I thought it was fantastic! There was a social on Friday night and then we attended a session of Saturday.

Has anyone heard if the estimated 2/15 ish date for the next wave is accurate?

@katedot I’m hoping… expecting it in the mail this week. I like how USC does everything by mail, a lot more exciting opening a physical package than online

@jackd341 I completely agree! DS was excited when the mail came with his “Yes” package. It was even sweeter since it arrived in early November as opposed to the December date he had heard. I have since signed up for USPS Informed delivery and get emails every morning with pictures of that day’s mail. So I will get a little heads up if something comes in the mail

@katedot Keep us updated when you see the package out for delivery! thanks

@jackd341 Will do - crossing fingers. This is going to be a long week!

There’s a extra fee (or tuition) for USC honors college students, right? I can’t find any confirmation online. How much is it?

I was told that they are still finalizing decisions this week and to not expect anything until next week or the week after.

@StGzrMaryland, there is a fee for Honor’s. This year it was $575.00 per semester (daughter is a Junior and it was closer to $500.00 a semester when she started). There is also a fee for specific colleges. For Darla, it was $678.00 a semester this year.

Where did you hear that? Admissions’ Twitter has been silent

@StGzrMaryland @hopewhite25 My son was able to get smaller scholarships from Moore and The Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs to offset some of the Moore and SCHC fees. The scholarships required the completion of an application.
