Stanford Class of 2021 Applicant Discussion

Did you guys put anything in the extra info section?

Is it bad that I did not submit FAFSA but selected yes for financial aid

@AznDude525 I crafted the additional info section into an essay it was exactly 650 words

@Chips99 Have you ever visited the campus? The surrounding area may come as a shock to some lol.

@futuredoc99 Not really, as long as you do the CSS Profile

@futuredoc99 The deadline for REA financial aid was mid-november, I believe. I think you just get your financial award later if you do not submit it on time.

@alexameagan21 I wish - I’ve taken it into consideration though, no worries

@futuredoc99 Like, a random essay, or an essay explaining something that stands out in your app or might seem off?

.

@Chips99 I’ve grew up in the L.A. County and the area has really gone to pot around the campus and in L.A in general. For lack of better words the area surrounding the campus is kind of a dump and skid row-ish which is unfortunate to see. Even when I would visit a lot in middle school, L.A was in much better shape. The city although crowded, is not bustling with a bunch of young social life anymore, just mainly old business people and such. Of course you still have the ritzy areas of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, but you have to have some serious cash to hang around there and still, not many young people (18-29) to really meet and mingle with. USC is a drive from UCLA which is the next closest school so not much cross-action there either. I mean it definitely has its’ niches. The film school and accounting school are unparalleled right now and football/sports participation is very high but it’s just not a friendly campus for real undergraduate bonding or an extensive city life like you would get in NYC. That’s why I want to get out of here and go up to NorCal, I LOVE San Francisco and it rains a lot more there too, lol. My parents who grew up in L.A. in its prime around the 80’s always say they never thought they would see it get that bad…so they even encourage me to move away

Would an additional essay seem to excessive for a reader?

It is an essay explaining a personal hardship. I was going to put that essay as my common app but decided not to @singhar17

@AznDude525 I hope you didn’t use the Additional Info space to submit another full blown essay because…yikes

Edit: Realized that @futuredoc99 wrote another essay concerning hardship. I would think that would be fine, but I’m no admissions officer.

@CiteYourSources That makes a lot of sense! I really appreciate your input

Yes. Our GC said don’t do it unless you are explaining away something bad, like a disciplinary action…

@educationfan Do you think it is harder to get in if youre an OOS student? im from socal :o

Deferred in REA to accepted in RD:

Hopefully, this link will work.

https://m.box.com/shared_item/https%3A%2F%2Fstanford.app.box.com%2Fs%2Fy4abufqg66nte7uax6eq

Scroll down to page 17 et seq. where Dean Shaw talks about rates of admission and yield. He cites that 145 students who were deferred in REA were accepted in RD. If memory serves me correctly, 563 students were deferred that year (high school class of 2014). If that number is correct, then approximately 26% of deferred students were accepted from the deferred pool in RD.

The number of deferred students increased significantly last year. Historically, it’s been around 550 - 600. Last year, I think around 800 were deferred, so the percentage of students deferred and then accepted in RD may have declined. The link provides the only year I have seen such specific numbers.

Is it too late to send updates by email? What type of thing would usually be considered an update that’s worth sending? Would something I left out of the additional information section qualify?

In my case I thought it was necessary to write a full essay.
