I’ll be applying Stanford REA with the arts portfolio fall 2017. Looking to apply under Symsys as my declared major… does anyone know if symsys in particular is super competitive like CS or engineering?
Hey guys! I got into Stanford REA last year (and will be attending this year), so I know about the hell that is college admissions. I would love to answer any questions people have about the admissions process, for Stanford or colleges in general!
Btw, from what I’ve heard, intended major has VERY little if any effect on admissions decisions. There are a substantial number of students who end up majoring in something else anyways. @crelly SymSys is very popular rn
Hey! Congratulations @theglowingdragon !! I have a question which I couldn’t find any answer to. I’ve sent 2 emails to Stanford, but given the amount of emails they get for a day, I really don’t expect a return. I have changed my high school this summer, so I’ll be attending my junior class in a new school. I was wondering from which school I should assign my guidance counselor -since I am international, our guidance counselors have little to none information about applying to US. I’ve spent 3 years in my former high school so I thought it would be more candid for my previous guidance counselor to report all the necessary files including my most current transcript. What should I do? And last but not least, do you have any tips for applying to Stanford? Thank you!!
sorry the mistake- I’ll be attending my senior class this year!
Hello! I’m an intl applying RD to Stanford CO 2022. It’s my no 1 choice but that 5% Is kinda worrying. Who else from Africa is here on this thread???
@factoryboylol I would look up your regional admissions officer to ask them about the guidance counselor, but I really don’t think it should affect your application that much because as long as they have your transcript, it should be fine. And as for tips, I know this sounds cliche but try to be completely authentic in your application. Talk about what makes you passionate or unique or quirky, but don’t try to tell the admissions office what you think they want to hear. imo the essays will be one of the most influential factors on your admission
Does Stanford receive October ACT for REA on time?
@FabIshimwe I think the latest you can take is on September. Stanford says that they cannot guarantee if they will receive the October ACT. So either take the October SAT or September ACT. You can find this information on Stanford’s website as well which I think would benefit you in this case.
Harvard>>Stanford
@MaybeHarvard2022 Not really, but if it makes you feel better sure
Is there a separate thread for Stanford RD applicants?
Hello…guys, I am from a country called Tanzania(in Africa) if any of you have heard of it!
I do the IB, math, chem both at HL so stuff right now is really tough. Luckily, I got a 34 ACT on my first sitting in April, 34 STEM so not bad. Wanted to retake to improve 31 math score and whole score to a 35/36 but my school/G counselor said it would be a risky and useless idea, oh well! The test I would be taking would be happening today, and I kinda feel like I should been in that room sitting it. Would 35/36 have been more help if I am considering: Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Upenn, MIT, Princeton.
EC…

GPA: I do IB so its different, I am around 38/42 ib points region.
Have a ton of school academic awards, prizes but sadly no regional or international Academic awards…this has to do with where I am for too, small village so I only learned about Olympiads a few months ago, I feel so bad for that for not going to any. Yeah did apply to summer TASP program but didnt get in, YYGS…didn’t apply cause of money problems.
I am taking the Sat Subject tests on Oct, Math2 and Chem, and I have to pull it off in 1 sitting as well, Any advice on this test from 700+ takers?
I am really nervous about SAT, I have decent Ec’s but something tells me that for schools esp. MIT, Princeton…the SAT Subject tests is a deal breaker, is That true? Would a 700+ score for STANFORD really boost the chances of an applicant, is it a deal breaker if I score under 700? I wanna go into CS/AI, economics or MechE, still undecided.
@Samim35 I am neither an expert nor incoming freshman who went through these procedures, but I believe I have a few idea on admissions especially for Stanford. SAT Subject Tests are definitely NOT a deal breaker for Stanford. They do not require it. I saw many people on admitted forums who had lower than 1400 SAT score without any subject tests. Though it does not mean they are not academically qualified, one just simply cannot make certain assumptions about what is a deal breaker for Stanford. You just never know. I’m taking the SAT on October and will be applying to Stanford REA without Subject Tests. I am also international (from Turkey). Right now I am more focused on my essays and SAT, because after this point, I expect no drastic change on my possible outcome of admissions. But I’ll still be taking Subject Tests on November and December (Math 2, US History and Physics), AP Calculus BC, Physics C and Studio Art 2D on May (we don’t have AP classes so I’m kind of self studying for these), which I’m taking because I like Math, Physics and Art. Do study for Subject Tests, and try to take them, not because you think it’s a deal breaker for unis like Stanford (which is not) but because you simply enjoy the subject and want to challenge yourself. Whatever you do, just enjoy the whole process!! Good Luck!!!
@Samim35 A 34 first time whoa! I literally doff my cap for you.
Is this thread still running? Or has it moved?
Seems to be running. I will be submitting my REA App soon. Good luck everyone!!
It’s crazy that we will know what the deal is in under 2 months. Already anticipated.
If you do SCEA, does that mean we cannot apply ED/EA to other schools?
I just found out that I got a 35 on my ACT today, hoping this will really get my chances up
@AimingTop50 how is your application? Are you submitting it already? And yeah, it’s so weird to know that we’re going to be getting our decisions in December… so much anticipation. I’m applying early, too. How are your essays? I’m just starting to write my supplemental ones, and my Common App one is just about done.
Hi there everyone! I feel like I may be late to the game with this thread, but I have just decided to apply REA to Stanford as well!! Mainly because of the ACT scores coming out today, I was shocked to find out I got a 35 in one go. I’m applying as an Art Practice major as my ECs lean heavily to the artsy side, but I have a few other passions mixed in there like Intel ISEF and playing international tennis.
I’m so so so nervous for the application process! I haven’t written the essays yet, its just so tough choosing the final topic to write about. I hope you are all doing well with them.
I was wondering, does Stanford require applicants to submit SAT subject tests? I didn’t quite get what I wanted and though I’m retaking in October, I’d feel a lot less pressure if they didn’t even really need them… do you know?
