Stanford University Transfers Fall 2011

@goingforanobel: Hey, thanks. Stanford is the only decision I’m still waiting for and I’ve already paid the tuition deposit at my second choice and signed up for orientation next month. So I can afford to be flippant, I guess.

@chasethecarrot: I can simultaneously whistle, hum, and wiggle my ears. Blindfolded! Am I in?

^What is your second choice?

UC Davis. My wife has a job interview tomorrow in Sacramento and we’re working on getting pre-approved for a home mortgage. No sense wasting any time since Stanford is a long shot, and it helps keep me from stressing about that last remaining app. Worst case scenario, I get into Stanford and have to give up my tuition deposit, my orientation fee, and my dreams of owning a house (anything near Stanford is waaaay out of our price range). All things considered, I think that’s a pretty nice worst case scenario!

Duke emailed an official letter which says decisions are available by May 12nd.

Has Stanford released something yet?

Anyone knows the time when they release decisions?

Nope but based on last year threads it looks like it should be coming out this week… i really think it will… most schools are coming out this week…

Probably any day, but I’ve seen May 13th. I don’t know if it was an e-mail Stanford sent, or from their website, but it was on something Stanford related. I just don’t want to dig it up. At the same time, it could really come out at any day and time this week.

From the Stanford forum here on CC, yesterday:

That’s the only information I’ve come across so far.

Hey everyone…
just another applicant to Stanford
nervous!!! Yale decision’s coming out on thursday and Stanford on friday!!! this week is going to be SOMETHING…just dont know what it is yet…:S

so it IS the 13th…like they told us in email…
wow the 13th friday lol but I also heard that decisions dont come out at once…

i didn’t get an e-mail! could you re-post it here?

Two rejection letters will be released to me. Duke and Stanford…

^Excuse me, but should you receive one, and you don’t know that you will, I think you should be aware that they are called, “your incredible talents are desperately needed elsewhere at this time; in fact, you are clearly just way too awesome for this totally overrated school” letters.

"Dear Valued Customer,

You seem like a very accomplished individual and if you would like to come in for an interview, we are always interested in hiring go-getters with positive energy for our sales team. However please be aware that for some reason we have received well over a thousand applications from people who think we are a university, and we only have a few openings in sales. We are probably going to have to fire our webmaster… We are sure you understand.

Best,
Stanford Unicycles"

Aaargh! I KNEW there was something hinky about that all the tire width and disc brake questions on that application! And that protective gear safety quiz…

I keep thinking back on my answer to the “why Stanford” prompt and feeling like I dropped the ball in a big way by paying it a bit less attention than the other prompts. I go back and forth between feeling I’m competitive and doubting that I have a chance. But I read through my supplement again this afternoon and it actually made me feel better; the “why Stanford” answer could have been improved, but it’s not bad, and I think my personal essay which I spent a lot of time on is about as strong as it could be. Breathe, breathe. I wish nobody had suggested a date for decisions, that means I can’t keep from thinking about it.

Oh, well. Anyone feel like sharing some of their answers to the oddly Facebook-style profile questions? What historical moment are you guys going to visit in your time machines?

I sort of cheated… I said rather than witness an event, I’d like to have dinner with Ben Franklin, Voltaire, and Ada Lovelace. And they’re not even all from the same century! If I don’t get into Stanford, I’m going to hold Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure directly responsible.

I feel ya’ bakemaster. I’ve really been swaying between thinking I am competitive and doubting I have a chance. I received my 2nd rejection today and I only have 2 more schools to hear back from (Stanford included). sigh I was just in the shower thinking “What happened to me? Since when have I let these things get to me so much?” It’s a weird place to be. Anyways, just a train of thought.

And I like how you put a spin on the question! What would you guys discuss? I’m hoping that the admissions committee won’t rip it up because it didn’t explicitly answer the question in whatever way they were looking for. I always thought they wanted to see how applicants thought about things.

I’ll just paste what I submitted below.

“I wish I could have witnessed the moment humans became human beings. It’s difficult to understand our resultant reality without understanding its causal reality. I believe that witnessing the development & experiences of the first human ancestors would provide insight into who we have become & why.”

And here are my “facebook profile questions”

Artists: Belle & Sebastian, Ingrid Michaelson, Stars, Bruno Mars, Hans Zimmer, and Jump, Little Children.

Films: Shawshank Redemption, Inception, Tae Guk Gi, American History X.

Books/Authors: The Divine Principle/Sun Myung Moon, Maximum Achievement/Brian Tracy, A New Earth/Eckhart Tolle

It would be really tempting to spend the whole time talking with Franklin about physics, to see how he would react to things like EM theory of the 19th century, and whether relativity and quantum would totally blow his mind or if he’d be receptive to their larger implications. But that would also be kind of a waste because I’m not nearly expert enough to be able to do that conversation justice. I think we’d end up talking about how the world had changed since their lives, and what they thought of some of our modern technological, social and political problems. It would be awesome to show Lovelace the Stanford video lecture on YouTube from CS 106A where Mehran tells the class how she was the first legit programmer.

I also cheated on the five words to describe yourself section. I gave them three sets… the five words that I hope I am described by, the five words that I fear I am described by, and the five words that, despite my hopes and fears, I am probably described by. I like to think of that response as thinking outside the box/going beyond the prompt, but I guess it might not go over too well depending on the reader.

^ I love your answer. What would you discuss with Voltaire?

This isn’t what I wrote, but I’d love to see a round-table discussion between Newton, Einstein, and the clown-rapper guy who doesn’t know how science works.

omg!! wish i didn’t look at my stanford app. reading it over i put 2 "indeed"s in really awkward places. i sound like an ass lol

Anyone konws how these admission staff send out decisions? online status tracking? email? express mail? mail???

@BCP: Same discussion for all three of them, and if Lovelace feels like the odd one out given that the other two were certainly very famous in her time, she’s at least got the advantage of being from their futures and likely having a better idea of the potential for computing technology to change the world.

Insane Clown Posse meets Einstein and Newton? I have no idea how Einstein would react, but wasn’t Newton supposed to be kind of an… unpleasant fellow? Anyway, no need to tag-team, [Feyman could do it solo](<a href=“Feynman: Magnets FUN TO IMAGINE 4 But see NEW UPDATED file at https:/■■■■■■■■.com/ycphc432 - YouTube”>Feynman: Magnets FUN TO IMAGINE 4 But see NEW UPDATED file at https:/■■■■■■■■.com/ycphc432 - YouTube).

@museumgerm: Yeah, I found a couple small typos in mine, too. Left out a preposition in a sentence or two. I don’t think they’ll trash us just for that.

@EEatPurdue: “All decisions will be sent via email from Richard Shaw, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, and will not be available on any Stanford website. Students who are admitted will also be mailed a formal offer letter of admission…” ([Admission News : Stanford University](<a href=“Page Not Found : Stanford University”>Page Not Found : Stanford University))
