Hello, I'm a rising sophomore and I think it's the right time to get a good idea as to what colleges to aim for. I currently have a 4.0 and am in the Top 15 (it may actually be the top 10, but we haven't gotten our latest rankings for this semester yet). I'm African American and am not closed off to HBCUs, but I wanta know which ones would be best for me (I'm interested in Law, Education, and possibly Business). I'm looking for schools of small-moderate sized schools located in the southeast (nothing west of Mississippi or north of DC). Also, I need a full-ride.on merit. My parents don't qualify for financial aid, but they won't pay based on principle. I'm looking for schoools similar to Tulane, but that offer Full-Rides. Any help?

Howard and Alabama seem like great matches.

EDIT: If you get a decent enough SAT score, Howard and Alabama would offer you full rides. These are lists of other schools that offer automatic/competitive full tuition/full ride scholarships depending on your grades and test scores, a lot of them are in the southeast.

Afromerican (needed to improvise)and good gpa plus good SAT. Go for UNC Chapel Hill, Maybe Emory or UMiami

Rhodes in Memphis offers a lot of merit aid. Also consider Wake Forest and Davidson

What principle won’t they pay?
Well u have to have a good GPA to recieve merit scholarships. Also try being more involved in clubs or national societies that give out scholarships

Essentially because they got full scholarahips to their state schools (an HBCU) and then worked their way up. So they don’t put a lot of importance on undergrad school, and are against taking out loans.

Also, I’d apply for National Achievement junior year right (along with NMS), the page was a bit ambiguous.

Yes, your PSAT score from your junior year is the one that would qualify your for NMF and National Achievement.

Yes, look at the more recent posts in the threads linked in #2 here for lists of big merit scholarships and target your college search appropriately (the automatic ones as potential safeties if you meet the thresholds and the competitive ones for non-safeties).

Take the PSAT sophomore year for practice, then for real (i.e. for National Merit) junior year. In junior year, also take the ACT and SAT. If needed, retake the higher one senior year to try to boost it.

You may also want to check these lists for National Merit scholarships:

Since you are in Georgia, also see what in-state scholarships you may be able to get, such as the HOPE scholarships.

Ahh okay. It’s also mandatory/free here sophomore yr.
You all have been a great help.
