State AP Scholars

There are questions all the time concerning what is needed to get the State Scholar award. Everyone who received it this year should post their stats on this thread, and maybe that would help.

me: Texas, male, 21 tests, 4.9 average

AP scholar awards have come out?

I got my state scholar one today.

how many exams did you take each year and which didnt you get 5's on

yeah..can u post all the tests u took and ur scores for everyone's reference?

EDIT: ooh and congrats by the way!!!!

No one else on the board got one?

My S took 13 AP exams in HI--he got 2 4s & 11 5s. We haven't heard anything & he's off at college, so I don't think he's heard anything either (since CBoard doesn't have his address, nor does his HS). I'll ask his counselor next week if we don't hear anything.

I recieved mine in the mail today...
Male
South Dakota: 3 5's, 7 4's 2 3's 1 2 13 tests 3.92 avg no natl scholar QQ

My S received his notification in HI today. He is the state scholar, as well as a national scholar & AP scholar with distinction. The State Scholar certificate/award is mailed to the Department of Education, presumably so they can award it to the student. Will see when & how we are notified (S is already off in college).

Congratulations to iwastypo for being named the male Texas State AP scholar.

However, it is open for debate whether you actually passed the greatest number of AP exams in Texas last year. My son, also from Texas, took and passed 22 exams by 2006, with mostly 5s and only one 3. The catch: he took the Computer Science A exam in 2003 (when the language was C++, passing it with a 4) and again in 2005 (when the language had switched to Java, passing it with a 5). At the time he was given the impression by his teacher that this would count as two exams, because the tests examined two distinct courses, and he actually retook CS to prepare for it. In the end it appears the college board counted it only as one, which means you won the tie breaker.

What this really shows is that the College Board needs to come out with a new recognition structure. Several of my son's friends passed 15 exams or more, yet there is no award level between National AP Scholar and State AP Scholar.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to start college with 90+ credits, as a senior. The primary benefit: better seats in the football stadium next year.

I had 14 exams(6 5's, 7 4's, and 1 3) and did not get state scholar for Georgia. I agree with the previous post about the necessity for a higher award; but it doesn't really mean anything.

I don't actually think there should even be a State AP Scholar. It's so arbitrary depending on where one lives and how large the state is. How about an award that goes to the top 100 test-takers in the nation, regardless of residence?

Your son got beat by iwastypo fair and square, stop complaining. Why don't we just start giving out participation awards and last place ribbons so no one gets their feelings hurt?

It would matter more if there was any monetary or other benefit attached to the State AP Scholar awards. As there isn't, it's at most just another line the student can add to his/her resume. My S's gradel level counselor at his exclusive private HS had never heard of AP State Scholar & asked me what the heck that was. <grin>
Wish they would at least give back the >$1000 in test fees we paid for the child to get AP State Scholar. That would be nice. :)</grin>

"Your son got beat by iwastypo fair and square, stop complaining. Why don't we just start giving out participation awards and last place ribbons so no one gets their feelings hurt?"

Why don't you shut up? She wasn't complaining at all, just commenting on how they really tied but the CB didn't consider his one test score.

It would be fair to call CBoard & ask them to reconsider, since it appears there is a good reason to consider a tie under the circumstances you've written about. The computer curriculum really changed in the years your S took the exams.
Finding a tie under these circumstances would seem a reasonable & fair result.

wow... 21 ap tests... jesus tapdancing christ

i'm under the impression that the vast majority of those who get state scholar have already graduated from high school (since most ppl take the most ap's senior year). Is this valid, and if so, why doesn't the CB award the award after junior year, so as to be more applicable for college applications?

I've read of a student who got the State AP Scholar award after both his junior year & after his senior year. For the most part tho, it does appear that most are awarded to kids who are already freshmen in college, since many took more APs in Spring of their senior year.

it is a piece of paper, which is nice, but the scores are what they will see, and int he big scheme of things, often doesn't replace college classes, as colleges are really cutting back on the # of classes you can get out of

not having a piece of paper in no way, though, takes away the scores

so they are freshman in college...should their tests be discarded

this is why awarding people for taking the most of anything is just silly
