State AP Scholars

what the hell. why is everyone here obsessed with APs?? Just take a normal amount of APs (like 10 or less) and try to actually be able to study and do well on them. Because honestly, taking 20 APs is just ridiculous. and a waste of time if you can't actually take the time to truly learn everything.

Well, if you can get a 4 or 5, then the college board has determined that you have learned everything ;)

I had 8 before senior year. Senior year I took 7. In Arizona, if you pass 17+ you don't have a chance, you've got it. XD But don't push too hard, like don't take AP's that your college won't accept. Good luck!
What high school are you from? just curious.

Hey, thanks for that info! I really appreciate it.

I go to Tucson High Magnet School...

You really think I shouldn't study for tests my college wont take?

Hm...

Hey fellow Tucsonan! Beat those Phoenix private school kids. XD I'm from UHS.
Well, I'm at Stanford now, who took only 4 out of my 15 AP's. So 11 of my AP's went straight to waste. If you're thinking Ivy, they don't take many AP's it prob will be a waste of time. After all, it is just a piece of paper (and a badly printed one at that) If you're Flint and thinking U of A you might want to take as many as possible.

20 courses shouldn't be difficult if you have reasonable interest in all of them.

googol123,

I'm thinking Hopkins, if they let me in, which as of now, will only accept like 2 of the APs I've tested. My sister is a soph at UHS.

You liking Stanford? We sent our valedictorian there last year.

For some reason I thought there was some money associated with the award. I'm pretty good at taking AP tests with minimal effort/studying and getting 4s. So, we'll see.

Tucson ftw

Your valedictorian must be Taylor then. XD She's in the same dorm with me. Honestly, I don't know how I feel about Stanford atm.
Nope there's no money, it's printed on the same piece of paper as any other AP scholar. The "Your name" on a line, has won this award...lol.
If you have that many AP's and good other stuff (recs, extracurriculars etc) Hopkin's no problem at all. 20 of my classs applied to Hopkins and 12 got in (including me), although no one ended up going. You should aim higher, I think you can make into one of HYPS.
Good luck! Tucson FTW indeed XD

googol123,

Nah, I think Hopkins is the school for me... And our Val is not Taylor, she's Lindsay... hmmm...

I really hope Hopkins lets me in... it's such an annoying wait!

As indicated by HImom, there are also connotations of class privilege to the award (cost of $1000+, no financial benefits)

Low income students get a test fee of around $5-$7 from the collegeboard, and at some schools people get discounts for taking numerous tests in one year.

And as for getting a life... if the 20 tests are by the end of senior year you would only need 5 a year, which is doable. I know someone who took 5 of them in freshman year without much effort ^^ All 5's. He's a certifiable genius though.

Now the people who really need to get a life... national level athletes. Now that eats time like crazy.

^just WHY are you bumping this, Keshira??

but since you already have, i might as well respond.

incidentally, who here on cc thinks they might have a shot at state ap scholar?

Do you think there are some people that enter high school with the preset goal of getting ap state scholar?

Who's to say people that spend time on their passions "need a life?" National level athletes travel across the country, compete against new people, and develop friendships. Just because something takes up a lot of time doesn't mean you should drop it.

If anyone needs a life, it's people who take 20+ AP's. If you do it because you love to learn, great. But AP's shouldn't be taken just because you can say you took more than your classmate. Besides, skipping out of introductory college classes because you were able to cram for AP Psychology the night before is only hurting yourself. There is little doubt in my mind that a good first year class at a high caliber school should be taken over a high school AP (which is why HYPS don't accept many AP's).

amen senor amen

so if I got a 3 in AP world and a 4 in AP US, do I get recognized at all

and lets say I get 3's this year? (I'm smart in classes, not the best test-taker though)

I will have taken 13, but I'm in Indiana, so who knows....everyone I know in-state thinks I'm crazy, but I realize there's plenty of people in other states taking 20+, sooooo we'll see

Has neone from texas received the AP state scholar thing...if yes approximately how many APs did you take??? n can i please know which ones??? thanks for your answer in advance xP

hey arizona people! sorry to rain on the tucson party, but i'm a junior from phoenix (not chaparral or the private schools, just a little charter) and i took 8 ap exams this year. do you think i could be state scholar if i passed another 8 next year, or would i need to do 9?

this year i took both of the two offered in english, latin, and econ. i also took physics b and us government. my school offers no ap classes, so i had to self-study all of them (although i was taking a physics class, it only covered about half the physics b material). this is what i'm thinking for next year:

calc bc (class covers entire ap syllabus)
chem (not sure about coverage)
art history (self-study but i already have a good knowledge)
comparative gov't (self-study)
human geography (ditto)
psychology (ditto)

if i need 2-3 more to be state ap scholar on the girls' side, which should i take? i've already taken all the language exams i can, and i dislike physics so i would rather not do physics c. i do enjoy bio, but my school doesn't have a bio lab, so i'm not sure how i would learn the lab questions. would it be realistic for me also to try bio and environmental science? i was planning to do some summer reading in bio anyway to prepare for science bowl.

For labs, search for them online, they have answers and explanations for everything.
