Sticky Situation?

I was accepted to all 4 academies with the exception of the Coast Guard, because I did not apply. I received both a Presidential nomination and a congressional nomination to USAFA. I got my acceptance letter to USAFA the first week of November, and sent in all my paperwork before December. I am a future cadet for the class of 2012. Unfortunately this last week I received news from the ACT board about how my ACT scores are under questioned and I might need to take the test over again. USAFA has my SAT score which is 590 Math and 570 Verbal, but it was my ACT score that more than likely got me in with a 27 Composite. If I take the test and score below 3 points from the 27 Composite, the ACT board will cancel my previous score of 27. The Academy will more thank likely hear about it, but will they drop me from the entering class. Anything would help me greatly.

Regards

Not sure about your predicament but may I ask why the ACT board stated your scores "questionable"? Was it a major difference from your previous scores or something of the sort?

Yea it was a major difference. My first time I didn't really study and got a 21, the second time; I cared and got a 27. They basically said, I have to take the test again, and if I score below three points from my 27 Composite, they will drop my 27 Composite score. The 27 Composite score was the reason why I got in the Academy not my 590 math and 570 verbal. What I am afraid of is that the Academy will drop me out of the potential 2012 class, because I take the test again and make a 23 composite score. Since the 23 composite score is less than the necessary 3 point range to keep the original 27 composite, they will drop the 27 composite score. Do you think the Academy will drop me, after 3 months of being on their list for the class of 2012.

i went from a 21 to 32 and they didnt say anything to me... weird

The 27 composite is comparatively close to your 1160. ACT equiv is 1210. I would think you should score higher, since if you have a rigorous 12th grade load, you should be able to do better than you did back in Sept. It is wierd that they asked this b/c a 21=1010, and the SAT board would not think 2x about you going up 100 pts in ea subject.

Have you spoken to your gc to ask why. It maybe easily rectified without re-taking. ALways hope for the best :)

I would also contact your ALO and ask him if the AFA would be notified about this issue, this might be some of your fears to rest.

Reason being was because some one sitting near me had almost identical scores to mine they said. I am not very concerned about taking the test so much, but the fact the Academy will drop me. My 27 composite score will be cancelled, so all they have will be my SAT of math 590 and verbal 570. Would the Academy do this to me, so late in the game?

I think your SAT score is not that much lower, so they might give you a pass. Are you a recruited athlete?

NO, but very involved in other activites.

Wow, what are your activities?

I ask because the AFA admissions page state that a 590 (I think it might be 580) Verbal and/or 24 CR ACT would not be deemed competitive. SO to get an appt. in Nov. with those scores and one MOC's is a tribute to you.

Our DS has 4 noms, and a 33 ACT, 1390 SAT and has yet to hear...so be very happy and I am sure there is something that is amazing that the SA will fight for you

What state are you from that released nom by Nov? Our noms didn't come out until Jan

Atlanta, Georgia in John Linder's district.

and how in the world did you get 3 other noms before December?

all the other boards have you describing the same situation, stating you got accepted at the ____ academy and that you accepted the appointment before December and I just dont see a 27 ACT nailing that kind of a response, perhaps you might shed some more light on this? Any principal noms perhaps?

PA came out November 30th with my Senator...

I just thought about it, you will need to contact your ALO or regional, because the books close in a few weeks, and your score may change. Contact your ALO they will help you out more than anyone here can.

Good luck

March 1st is the deadline I do believe...

and iam sorry bud if I come across as being accusatory because I do not intend to, just curious because you definitely got yourself in one mighty "pickle"... keep us posted on this and let us know how it turns out...

Good luck bud... ;)

Are you a principal nom?

This might help in your situation.

The reason why I posted this on other posts for other academies was to get everyone’s prospective on the situation. I am a principal nom and congressional nom to USAFA. All the other posts are me, but I am really going to USAFA. I can delay my response to ACT by March, if I do that, will that be better or should I act now. If they close the books in March like what airforce16 says, I should be safe, right?

I would contact your ALO ASAP. I would not be suprised if the ACT has contacted the schools that you submitted your scores to when you filled out your ACT paperwork about the issue already.

Your situation really needs to be handled by your ALO and regional.

Positive side you have a principal and your SAT score is not far off from the ACT, so you should be okay, as long as the acad. sees you as competitive.

Why are you worried about your ACT being the score they took compared to the ACT..it is only off by 50 pts.? Did AFA tell you that your ACT was a factor to get your appt compared to the SAT?

I hope that you overcome this issue. Best of luck

BTW I just re-read your last post...you said you are a principal and congressional...did you mean you are a principal nom from your MOC?

i think it's nuts that you got accepted to all the academies in the first week of november and didnt have all your paperwork in until december; unless the paperwork you're talkin bout is the acceptance stuff. go with what everyone else is sayin: call your ALO, and if asked to retest, do better. i really doubt your score would drop 4 points, that means you did some MAJOR good guesswork on the test that they accepted. i wouldnt be too worried, just do what they ask you to do and talk to your ALO

Short answer..NO

Remember hiding the fact will hurt you more than coming out and explaining the situation

OK Kid want you to think hard about this. "A Cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do." You have an obligation to be straight about this first with the ALO, and second with Admissions. Something changed in your package. Among the many papers and electronic documents you acknowledged were statements saying you would notify them of changes. You are not bound by the Honor Code nor will you be until Acceptance in August, but you are the one that will have to make that judgement. Truth I don't think the SAT scores are going to kill you (Yes they say 600-650) It has happened for cadets with lower scores (not many), but it has happened. Do the right thing not the easy thing.

While the cut off is around the corner for YOU to submit/update your file, AFA can un-appoint you at anytime. DO NOT WAIT - take care of this at your earliest possible moment. Call your ALO and/or even AFA directly and discuss with admissions. If you have nothing to hide you have no reason not to call them and take care of this ASAP. Yes, they can (and have done so before) take an appointment away. Be up front about what is going on - you would certainly prefer that AFA hear about this from you directly.
