Hi I'm a high school junior and I was interested to see if anyone has had any experience with Stony Brook's pre-med program... just wondering how the classes were, if you got into med school and where, how you did on the MCATs, etc. All answers would be appreciated!

EVERYONE, and i mean everyone, at sb is pre-med. classes are huge and everyone is really stuck up and thinks they’re going to harvard med school with a 2.5 gpa. not everyone is like that, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Yes, SBU is very heavily centered in the sciences (most with pre-med tracking) and as ironicallyunsure said, the class sizes show it. In addition, if you’re looking for money or anything like that, you need to have extraordinary stats fi you apply pre-med there. I didn’t have outlandish stats (they were high for SBU, but not ridiculously so) but I got some merit money due to the fact I was pre-law and applied as a poli sci major. I would not have gotten that merit reward if I was pre-med.

Not true. Intended major plays no factor in scholarship awards.

Ugh…

Anyway, my cousin went to Stony Brook for undergrad, did well. She was also accepted to JHU, Mt Sinai, Cornell, Downstate, Einstein, and maybe some others, but went to Stony Brook for med school. Off topic, but she scored in the 99.9th percentile on that first licensing exam or whatever =p no clue what its called but you take it in your 3rd year I think

there’s always going to be a handful of people who don’t fit the norm. your cousin probably got tons of merit $$ from sb or something and chose there. one example doesn’t make up for the vast majority.

Well then, I guess I got really lucky? Then again, I don’t trust the financial aid system at all so perhaps I did. In any case, if you intend to be anything but pre-med, it does make you stand out a bit more.
