Subject recommendations?

Hi, i'm having some trouble with selecting the subject tests for december... i'm more of a math and science person so should i choose one math and two science tests or should i try one humanities like history or literature?

Please help!
1. math I or II
2. physics or chemistry
3. literature or history

and should i also take a language? i'm fluent in korean and i'm thinking about taking it in january just in case colleges accept it. or should i take spanish since i'm already korean?

Genereally you only really need up to three subject test and since you're a math/science person, i'd advise you take the math II and physics and chem. I guess you could take math I, but for a competitive school especially going in as a math or science major you'd want to take II.

If you really want to you can take Korean and/or Spanish but I wouldn't. There's really no need, especially if you can score well on these three tests.

I thought physics was easier than chem, but maybe that's just me. Math 1 is like the math section of the SAT all over again, so take math 2 unless if you didn't do so well in the SAT 1. As for the third subject, you should take history (US?) or korean.

I think the curve for physics is just more generous.

Definitely do Math II if you're good at math. Just be very careful, and make sure you practice so you know how much time to spend and such.

If you want, you can take Korean. I don't think it'll impress colleges very much though since you're Korean.

Colleges are looking for language proficiency, regardless of ethnic origin. I don't think Spanish would be any better for your case than Korean for a subject test, especially if you might score high in Korean.

i heard that colleges look down on you if you are a native speaker. Other than that, I think you should diversify a little bit.

so i'd go with math II, chemistry/physics (doesn't matter), and language arts.

smile: that's exactly what i was thinking. but some korean people are considering it for the high score.

caltech: i got an 800 on the sat1 math. :) i guess math II is the one for me!

bigb: i've heard that literature is a really hard test... and i'm not even good at taking the sat1 cr :/

Yeah, I know alot of Chinese people taking the Chinese one for the 800 and just so they fill the 2 subject test requirement. I doubt colleges are going to think much of it though.

I wish i could get 800 on sat 1 math! (got 730) I always make careless mistakes..
any advice???

I also have the same dilemma. I want to take the literature one..it seems like it'll look really good if you get a 700+ on it. But CR is my weakest section on the SAT 1. Maybe if i do a whole bunch of practice tests? Don't know if it's worth the time though.

i've decided to take the history test instead. literature seems too intimidating

and for math1, practice ALOT. i know you were looking for some magical formula lol but practice is all i can think of. i suggest doing the sections in a practice test and going in detail what your mistakes were. if you understand it, great! write it down somewhere so that you won't make it again. if you don't understand it, feel free to message me the question and i'll try to help you =)

haha 한국어 짱!

but anyways yeah if you use korean (as a native speaker) to "fill up" an SAT requirement, then it may not appear so favorable to colleges. However, I think you have enough SAT IIs anyway, so you might as well.

FYI Korean is only offered on the November test date (along with the other "w/ Listening" tests).

And I've heard that the Spanish test can be very difficult...so prep for that extensively before taking it - w/o listening is more grammar heavy fyi.

Just take Math II, Physics, Chem and or Biology. Screw Humanities if you aren't good at them.

Yeah, if you are more comfortable w/ 2 sciences do that. It really doesn't matter that much, imo

yeah but if you can get a combo like 800 lit + 800 Math2 then you're showing colleges that both sides of your brain are powerful ;)
